Blood work, cat scan, ok , but said they wanted to do a stress test in morning.n unfortunately the 350 bed hospital had over four hundred patients. He remained in the hall outside the ER desk on a narrow cot all night, with no water, no iv, no food , and no sleep. Around two the next afternoon, we discovered no stress test had been ordered and it might be three more days. We demanded his release, and agreed to do all tests outpatient which we have been doing all week. Our bill was 19000. The cat scan showed a nodule in his thyroid, subsequent ultra sound and aspiration showed malignancy. So we inadvertently found cancer, when they suspected heart problems. I had thyroid cancer, so I know what is ahead, and have contacted a surgeon. To start the process.

What an awful experience at that hospital. You were lucky to start the ball rolling on your own and found what is really wrong with your husband. I hope that he will do as well as you seem to have done.

Is this type of cancer common in the area where you live or just coincidental? I really hope that they caught it early.

As a type A person I really am tempted to push the boundaries a bit but I am going to do what they say and take it slow.

Yes, do what they say and you will be OK. My husband had to do exercises at home but didn't feel it necessary and the results could have been so much better but that was with a stroke. It's still amazing how much he improved and how much they can do if the hospitals and rehab facilities are good. This is one blessing living in a big metropolitan area.

Regarding thyroid cancer, it is really scary that we both have it, and I have not heard of others getting it where we are from. What is strange is that when I returned to Florida after getting treated up north, I discovered five of us in our Florida subdivision had been treated for it that summer, from all over. That will be six years for me, I was third stage, one who was fourth stage has had it spread, and one man has had a reoccurrence. What is scary is that both my children have growths also but have tested benign. Some doctors feel it is over diagnosed.

Geez Rapmarks, do you live near a nuclear power plant ? I have worked on homes downwind from Hanford WA and it seems like many people were afflicted with thyroid problems including cancer. It seems like they started a group called the downwinders to sue.

My ex-brother in law who works at Hanford got some kind of cancer and had to do the chemo and radiation last year. He is good now and went back to work at Hanford.

In Illinois, rural farmland area. In Wisconsin, Wisconsin dells, surrounded by farms, in Florida halfway between Naples and fort Myers, it could be those cows, or the cheese.

I finished my cardiac rehab. I was walking 3.5 miles with a couple of 4 mile hour sessions and staying in my safe heart rate zone with an exertion level of 11 - 12.. When I started rehab I could do about 1.5 miles staying in my safe heart rate zone with an exertion zone of 12. I have pericarditis because of the heart attack so strength training kind of aggravates this.

So I seem to walk pretty good.

I have lost about 20 pounds since my heart attack. I want to loose 20% of my weight as I lost 20% of my heart function. So I have about 20 pounds left to loose. My new diet is pescatarian.

I had an electrocardiogram yesterday and I could actually see that the one side of my heart isn't moving near as good as the other. I asked the person doing the echo about this and she said that the cardiologist will need to interpret the information leaving me in another few weeks of suspense. I know I have damage as my blood pressure has dropped and my heart beat is off at times.

All in all, I feel pretty good and have accepted my limitations. Things that I thought were going to be a problem seem to be working out. My dog Rex who had the broken leg and cast on for 5 months only limps occasionally and for the most part seems to be able to jump into my Jeep. I have my next winter trips planned. I have two fishing trips planed. My family and friends have planned a work weekend for our cabin to cut fire wood and what ever. This work weekend sounds like a party to me. We have been to a few restaurants and all of them have been able to accommodate my diet.

It is starting to look like I might be retired very soon which doesn't seem to bother me very much.

                Anyway, thanks.

Good to see you on the mend, Bill. That weight loss will help a lot and I hope the heart variations are not a problem. Retirement isn't a bad thing - you seem to have enough activities to keep you busy enough.

Good luck with your retirement. Since you have enough hobbies and like traveling too, you may not miss the work you did before.

Good for you that you are feeling better and that your family and friends have planned a work party for you to get things done around the cabin that are hard physical work.

Ron had his surgery Monday, and the nodule was just a nodule. They removed left half of thyroid, biopsied it, and it was not malignant . They left the right side in and we are hoping it keeps working. Good news, no cancer.
