There is a very interesting thread over yonder regarding a poster who was banned on the disboards for some posting behaviors.
Here is the thread: DISboards gave me a "Time-Out" suspension
I found it interesting from multiple perspectives.
First, I know Steamboat Bill. We met a couple of weeks ago for lunch and he is a really nice and smart guy. It's interesting how different people are in person than in cyberspace.
Second, I didn't read any of his Disboard posts, but he really got flamed on TUG. I felt badly for him probably because I have met him in person and I see him as a human and not a screen name on a message board. He took the flames really well on non-defensively. I admire that. I couldn't resist responding in like kind.
Third, I don't mind controversy and provocative posts. It makes a board very interesting as long as it doesn't get out of control with personal insults.
It is really tough to come up with rules for moderation that can be applied consistently. And, anyone who gets edited or banned will probably be angered by the actions.
I was happy that TUG didn't close down the thread. But, I didn't think it was right for Steamboat Bill to get personally attacked on the thread if personal attacks are not allowed.
Just food for thought. No conclusions. Just intrigue.
