  • Interesting Thread Over Yonder... re: Disboard suspension

There is a very interesting thread over yonder regarding a poster who was banned on the disboards for some posting behaviors.

Here is the thread: DISboards gave me a "Time-Out" suspension

I found it interesting from multiple perspectives.

First, I know Steamboat Bill. We met a couple of weeks ago for lunch and he is a really nice and smart guy. It's interesting how different people are in person than in cyberspace.

Second, I didn't read any of his Disboard posts, but he really got flamed on TUG. I felt badly for him probably because I have met him in person and I see him as a human and not a screen name on a message board. He took the flames really well on non-defensively. I admire that. I couldn't resist responding in like kind.

Third, I don't mind controversy and provocative posts. It makes a board very interesting as long as it doesn't get out of control with personal insults.
It is really tough to come up with rules for moderation that can be applied consistently. And, anyone who gets edited or banned will probably be angered by the actions.

I was happy that TUG didn't close down the thread. But, I didn't think it was right for Steamboat Bill to get personally attacked on the thread if personal attacks are not allowed.

Just food for thought. No conclusions. Just intrigue.

I know nothing about Disboard, but as far as everything else you mentioned, I am familiar with both personal attacks, and being suspended.

I saw that thread and did not open it, but if that is what is being discussed, or done, it is being discussed, or done in a place with some experience.

      I don't believe I find it interesting.

Wow, he was really given a hard time. I felt bad for him. If he wanted commiseration, he sure went to the wrong place.

DISboards is a wonderful place for Disney lovers like me. I find that my posts are not nearly as informative or as interesting as others' are. I cannot believe what a great resource it is for information that relates directly to most of my vacations, which are practically all Disney vacations.

When I wanted to know whether the Disney Dining Plan was a good deal, I had so much information offered to me via the thread and through emails. If you want to really use the Disney Dining Plan, study the threads that are related specifically to that subject.

As for Steamboat Bill, he clearly believes that Disney Vacation Club is very valuable, more than the $10-11 per point that most Disney owners charge to rent. But $10 per point makes a one-bedroom in the slow season, like January, worth $160 a night. I think that is too much. Of course, I have only stayed in a studio and paid a Disney member $100 a night for 5 nights, Sun-Thurs. It is a nice hotel room and I was sorry I paid that much because I could have had something cheaper with my RCI points. I just wanted to experience Disney Vacation Club. Now we are staying in a one bedroom at OKW for 12 days, with two exchanges. I hope we love it! I doubt that I will think it is worth $160 per night, though.

I understand loving what you own and do not fault Bill for bringing up his frustrations on TUG. It is too bad that he is getting assaulted in such a way. I have felt that recently and know exactly what he is going through, but at least he is a man and will not take it as personally as women tend to do. It took me a long time to get over mine, but he will bounce back.

            Hey Cindy,

I think you are really great. Anyone who attacks you should be hung by their thumbnails. I love your posts and how you stick up for your principles.

Yes, I'm sucking up. I've decided to make some deposits into some emotional bank accounts. I think I've been making too many withdrawals lately. Time to build up that bank account. Hmm, can I buy some with my TS4Ms points?

Jim, what are you feeling guilty about? You are too funny. Thanks for that. I am way too sensitive. Most of what was said was probably not meant nearly as badly as I took it. I did decide to leave one particular poster, that resort and anything related to that resort completely alone! It's going to be good for my sanity. The most recent post by that particular person has been ignored and I couldn't be more relieved. At least, so far so good.

Rick and I are going to buy Disney points, but now we have decided on a small number instead of the 250-300 we were considering. We decided partly because of you, Boca! You took the tour (that I never bothered taking because you get nothing but some cookies and a dish of ice cream). You reported here that the system looked pretty good. So we went on a tour and I have been saving up ever since. Gotta pay cash for timeshares, even if that money was supposed to go into a mutual fund!

I disagree with Steamboat Bill and would use the points for cruises instead of renting. I would also use those five-night stays. DVC still looks like a great way to grab a Marriott or Westin Hawaii week. We only need a one bedroom. I want to rent all of our Hawaii weeks and trade into Hawaii cheaper than using my own weeks. That is my plan.

By the way, you said something a few weeks ago (maybe months ago) about how I should be able to get Bluegreen for 30 cents a point because I am a Realtor??? I don't get that statement and have been thinking about it ever since. Timeshare is not on the MLS in Denver. Can you clarify that one?

I talked to Seth Nock and he said because I am a broker that he could possibly help with a better price for DVC. Maybe he would not appreciate me posting that?

I am in LA for the week and thought I would be “internet free’ but the force is very strong and I could not resist.

Thanks for your kind words. It is a bummer that I got banned from DISboards for simply starting a thread about how members should raise their rental rates of DVC points. Obviously, there is some hidden agenda on that board as I probably was interfering with someone’s income stream, if you know what I mean. I have a new screen name and will lay low for awhile.

I don’t mind the attacks from TUG, unless they are stupid attacks by people who never read the entire thread that got me booted off DIS. I have actually been surprised at the amount of PM support people have sent me.

The #1 reason I posted this thread was because I have never heard of anyone getting banned from DIS or any other BBS and wanted to start a discussion about this.

I would expect to be kicked off and banned if I posted something illegal, made a personal threat, was racist, was anti-Semitic, was a bigot, attacked gays, was mean to animals, or made some sexual comments.

However, I just wanted to increase rental rates…geeze…DVC people are strange indeed.

Please try to convince me that a DCL is worth the points, when you can rent these points for $10-11 pp and then pay cash for DCL (ask for AAA discount) and save over $1000.

I have been on DCL three times and regretted using my DVC points. This is not only my opinion, but almost every "large poster" on DIS. In fact, do a search there and you may change your mind.

In 1999-2001, it was worth the trade, but the cost for DCL using points has risen so fast and so high, that there is no longer value in using DVC points for DCL. Only the 7 home resorts have a FIXED number of points per season/room size/weekday that never change.

In addition, I feel WorldMark points or buying a MMC/MSE platinum is better for Marriott trading than DVC. Just do the math...it takes about 170 DVC points for a 1 week II trade (plus $75 fee) and valuing points @ $10 = $1775 for a Marriott week (if you can even get it).

A couple years ago there was a person by the name of Gail Hayden who was banned from the disboards. I could never did figure out why. I thought she was such an asset to the boards. If anyone ever posts asking where she is the thread gets locked. I heard there is a long list of people who have been banned from the disboards.

Gayle Hayden was banned? She was one of the first buyers at DVC. I'd bet her owner number shows her as one of the first five hundred if not less...

I miss Gayle's posts on the dis boards. She had a lot of knowledge. I saw her on a TV travel special years ago. Smart lady.

Tagrel was banned from the Dis boards, too. Tagrel's site is one of my favorites for pictures and trip reports. I never knew why Tagrel was banned.

I think Shontell Crawford was banned, too. She's a DVC reseller. They call her "she who must not be named."

Shontell also sold us our Embassy Po`ipu back in 1999. Is she still at the Timeshare Store?
