  • Why do people post here, rather than TUG?

I may be all wrong, so bear with me....
I have been on TUG for a year. I noticed that posting from TUG seems to have gone down. I also recognized many TUGGERs are posting on this site as well.

    Why?

Possibly because of a perception that the mods here are more easy going and don't act as swiftly on topics that might be viewed as borderline on TUG.
Note I did say a perception.....

I think it is the more open atmosphere here. It is more than a perception. TSTIPS was started to offer a freer forum and most of the principles of that site came to this one.

I would like to think it might be because we have tried to build a community here where there is something for just about everybody... Talking about timeshares and vacations is fun but you need more then just timeshare discussions to get people interested in coming back and hanging out.

Some of our busiest forums you can't even see yet

I would have to agree. It is a wonderful community. Not everything goes, but not Big Brother, either. I am not very good at watching my tongue all the time, so I like to be here so I can be a little more myself. God forbid something I say touch on religion.

See I said "God". Thread is not closed, I like that. But TUG is nice, too. Just more "read only" for me.

Speaking for myself, I started here a little over a year ago, did both for a while. Found this was a better site with better content, a smaller, closer community, with a lot more 'love' than controversy... we have our moments, sure, but it's a great place to hang out. At the rate this site is going, the 'smaller' part may not apply for long, but I feel much more comfortable here.

I also like that this is a free site, no agenda other than to build and maintain a great site. And the response regarding suggestions/improvements/problems is extremely thoughtful and lightning fast...

And people here have a great sense of humor, too!

I better stop now before Ken stops working on the reviews section Once that's up and running, this will be the only site I'll need

I post on both, but I do find some of the people at TUG more argumentative. Lots of times I've been surprised by the really crabby cranky responses I've gotten (and other posters have gotten) to what I thought were pretty innocuous posts.

                      Frank:

You shouldn't be surprised when this question continues to be asked. Internet message boards operate in real time and not everyone is aware of history. It is natural for new people to want to know why there are two similar sites, with some common users.

As an 8-year TUG contributor with somewhere around 15,000 posts there, I would agree with all of the above.

Some post here, some post there, some post both places, and some post neither place.

In the summer of 2004, a few long-time TUG contributors started tstips, and some of the users of that site were others who migrated from TUG.

When TS4Ms started, there was a migration here.

Perception and preference is subjective and normally based on experience, real, not perceived.

If you have a free day, and I have the same day free, email me and we can discuss it.

                        Can of worms

This thread is a perfect example - one would think this would generate a barrage of defensiveness and accusations and all manner of hoopla. But no, instead we're seeing reasonable discourse. There is, of course, an undertone of 'let's not bash TUG overmuch' but I don't find that restrictive.

That is why I like it here better. I'm not going to get jumped on by someone for stating what I think. I might get into intelligent debate, but that's kinda why I'm here anyway. I've been silenced on the other side a time or two because my opinion was not the same as some of The Cool Kids. That's ridiculous BS that I don't need. That's what The Day Job is for

I never ponied up the monies to join Tug and never will. Donating over here is a different matter and I'm likely to be more generous because we see an actual committment to serving the membership. This is a more open and inviting environment. It's like hanging out in the game room instead of having to sit rigid and uncomfortable in the living room, afraid to touch anything or say something improper.

                          Timeshare bug bite?

Some people that regist in both sites are posting more in TUG. It just have different flavors.

It is a big TS world. All members (from Tug and this site add together) probably is less than 2% of all TS owners. I don't tracking any statistic number in this site or Tug, but Sept usually are slow month in Yahoo's FF site, the # of posts in that month is actually close to 1/2 of the summer month.

One of the big differences is the respective sizes of the communities. When I first joined TUG, the number of participants was much smaller and probably closer to the current size of TSForums. Not coincidentally, TSForums now has much the same "community" feel that TUG did then.

IMHO - the big thing with TUG is simply that the size of the community has grown. As it grew, the personal connections became more diffuse, and keeping behavior within acceptable bounds became more of an issue - self-policing became less effective. I've seen similar patterns on other boards as well.

I hope that TSForums will be able to retain community feel as it grows. It will almost surely incresingly occupy the site admin time and effort.

“This is a blouse and skirt. I don't know what you're talking about.”

                              “You shouldn't wear that body.”
