PETA Upset at Six Flags Roach Contest:

GURNEE, Ill. (AP) - People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wants Six Flags Great America to scrap its Halloween-themed cockroach-eating promotion.

A spokeswoman for the animal rights organization says the contest at the amusement park's FrightFest is "gratuitously cruel."

The park in Gurnee, Ill., is joining other Six Flags parks in offering unlimited line-jumping privileges to anyone who eats a live Madagascar hissing cockroach. The bugs are up to three inches long.

The contest begins next month.

Amusement park officials are defending their menu choice. Great America spokesman Jim Taylor says the bugs are nutritious, high in protein and fat free.

Hmmmmmm, this makes me hungry. I think I'll go out to my backyard and pluck a couple of 2 inchers off of our trees. (We grow a lot of them and really big ones here in Houston).

Oh I'm not ever coming to Houston then.

Then you have the really horrific Palmetto bugs. Big FLYING cockaroaches. YUK

NYC apartments are notorious for roaches ( not covered in chocolate either). It took a lot of work to not have them in my residences there for 35 years.

I can stand almost anything but ABHOR roaches.

Even our millionare's mansions can't get rid of our cockaroaches!. You can make them hide but when you go outside and turn on a light, they scurry everywhere!

I think that these critters have become immune to every kind of bug poison known to mankind.

I think that these critters have become immune to every kind of bug poison known to mankind.

Well we have been hi-tech poisoning the SOBs for 40 years and you know what works??? Boric acid. Get a case of the powder and place it behind every appliance and along every baseboard in every room.

Not harmful to pets or kids.

It might take a month or two but it DOES work. Even in NYC tenements.

Now if you market this little idea I want a percentage.

Luckily, we don't have problems with roaches out here on the West coast. Seems like we don't have a lot of the bugs that are common in the Eastern states, or even the midwest.

My husband went through the FBI academy in Quantico, VA and said you could easily tell who was from the Western states. They were the guys pointing into the night air saying "What the hell is THAT?"

I was thinking that if I were running the Six Flags promotion, I would have used fully grown Palmetto bugs instead of the Madagascar roaches.

I would also have the participants sign waivers and videotape them. I figure I could make a killing selling the videos.

Yeah I think Palmettos are much, much worse than Madagascars < although you wouldn't get me near the Ms either>

Frank, This was great (watching on screen, not being there, even better) but you didn't tell us it has a sad end.

My DD age 13 said "bring it on" she'll eat the bugs to be able to jump the lines at Fright Fest (she wants to ride the hayride...lol)

Our problem is termites. They are rampant here. I see them swarm and hope they pass us by but we have a yearly contract so hope they take care of it. One of our neighbors around the corner has never had a termite inspection yet and we can see from the street that her outcropping beams are eaten up by termites. We all think they come from her house but what can we do? People have mentioned it to them but they do not seem to care. When a house is for sale in this area, you know because you see a tent over the house.
