Actually, 8.50 isn't bad. Last drum of 112 R/M I bought was about 6.00 per, and that was resale.
This is an oft discussed topic on the VMF; my opinion is one should run the octane fuel which the engine requires to make consistent top power. You can't win races if the car isn't consistent.
Lastly, IME, iron headed engines were more sensitive to low-octane fuels than aluminum headed ones, but the iron heads could take more pre-ignition/detonation abuse.

Avgas is not unleaded....they have low leaded which is blue and fully leaded which is green. I looked it up on the Chevron site and they still produce the green stuff so you should be able to find it at your local airport....it is about $3 to $4 a gallon.

A good example of some of the information builders utilize when developing a particular engine/fuel package.
Personally, I tried and dismissed aviation fuel due to tuning issues arising from its different chemical makeup and different heat of vaporization, but that was for a strict discipline/application in racing. It should be fine for street use.
