  • Puka Dog

I was watching a show on hot dog places around the country. One was a place called Puka Dog on Kauai. Was wondering if anyone had ever had a Puka Dog?

Also, what's your favorite hot dog place?

I love James Coney Island in Houston.

Callahan's from Fort Lee comes to mind. They were on the news last year because they closed down and were around for ever.

Dominick's on Woodhaven next to St Johns Cemetery in Queens has great Dogs but a bit Pricey for a dog.

My BIL is part owner of Dominic's Sausage and Hot dogs mostly located in VA.

I live just a few blocks from a famous hot dog place, Hiram's in Fort Lee, NJ. It's been around since Palisades Amusement Park days. There was ANOTHER hot dog place right next to it called Callahan's (the motto: SO BIG! SO GOOD! do you believe it?), which closed just recently after about 40 years .

When I tell people where I live, they often say, "Hiram's! You're so lucky!" But I only had a Hiram's hot dog once, about 20 years ago. Ick. They deep-fry the hot dogs, which you would think would be good, but the hot dog itself is disappointing.

Anyway, Hiram's is often featured on those shows about Great Hot Dogs of America. If anybody's a big hot-dog fan, come on by!

Frank! Hiram's is still there. Also there's another Callahan's, run by the same family, on Route 46, about 15 minutes from here.

Hiram's was on this show too! I've never eaten a deep fried hot dog but would like to try it. We eat everthing else down here in the South deep fried.

I always wish I could bring them some good Hebrew National hot dogs and ask them to fry 'em up. It's those pork hot dogs that leave me cold.

Mapquest says 21 miles, 30 minutes. Yes, a Callahan's hot dog is just half an hour away!

When we were walking around the shopping center in Poipu we tried a Polish Sausage Puka Dog, it was pretty good. I would go back and eat another one

Puka Dog I liked them. I was a wimp and just did mustard. I am kind of a hot dog traditionlist-I like mustard and onions. My DH let them tell him which sauce and relish to order based on his likes/dislikes. I nibbled-I liked his better. I like how everything is stuffed inside the bun. If in Poipu-you should them at least once.

Maybe six years ago we stopped at the puka dog place when it was at the beginning of the road to Waimea Canyon. One of the owners was swiss and she had imported her puka dog machine. It is a hot dog wrapped in dough - was quite good. The stories of the owners' adventures was the best part.

I believe the business was relocated to the little mall in Poipu - never found them again.

                            Hope

Correction, it was Rutt's Hut that was on the show, not Hiram's, that deep fried the hot dogs. The rest of my post remains the same, I still want to try one.
