  • Trader Joe's - a perpetual woot-off?

Now that I've gone back to Trader Joe's and stocked up, I'll pass this tidbit along.

The lot of "Napa River" merlot at $4.99 is a great buy. If you're near a Trader Joe's get some before the supply is all wooted out.

But don't worry if you miss out; TJ's has loads of items all the time that are special buys that they "woot-off" at great prices until the supply is gone. I'm still kicking myself for not loading up on the Zorafer chenin blanc while they had it in stock.

I wish I had one that was close to me but I don't, I have to go 30 miles to the nearest one. That might be a good thing with my spending habits.

BTW from what I have seen, Not all the wines you might get in the West are here in the East. That Charles Shaw 2 buck chuck is not here in NY. I had my cousin ship me 2 cases a while ago of there different wines.

BTW has anyone noticed the Price of Yellow Tail creeping up. I remember a few years back it was $4 a bottle. Now they are closer to $10.

There's lots of stuff besides wines that TJ's obtains as a one-time purchase.

A few visits back I picked some fresh frozen ahi, which we defrosted and grilled a couple of nights ago. It was excellent - I seared it, marinating it with passion fruit teriyaki sauce (that we brought back with us from Kaua`i) combined with freshly ground lemon pepper.

IIRC - the ahi was about $5/lb. I wanted to get more this afternoon when I went back, but apparently that purchase is sold out.

What do you mean by Spicy? Have you ever tried Saki?

Frank...they're opening one in Edgewater, five minutes south of the GW Bridge. You can make a side trip when you go to Callahan's. Also there's one in Paramus now, on Route 17.

They don't have the wine in all the TJ stores, though. There's a good Italian market called Jerry's in Englewood where we go and buy everything in the $3.99 to $5.99 range. And that's a lot of wine!

My cousin sent me a case of 2 buck Chuck from California a little over week ago. I like it as an everyday wine with dinner. BTW Half the case is now gone.

                Frank,

The Yellowtail Chardonnay is $8.99 for the double size (1.5 liter) at Bottle Buys in Glen Head (at least it used to be, haven't checked recently). There is also a new wine store in Great Neck on Northern Blvd/East Shore Road that was discounting it too. At my local higher priced placed, they get $7.99 for the 750ml in both the Chard and the Shiraz.

Have you tried the reserves? Are they that much better?

We have it here in NJ, except it is "Three buck Chuck."

Both myself and Viking boy had the Yellow Tail Reserve about 2 weeks ago. It was pretty good but for the $11 a bottle that Jimmy paid I think I prefer the Da Vinci that he normally gets.

                      "Three Buck Chuck"

                      From Arlene:

"We have it here in NJ, except it is "Three buck Chuck."

It is only $1.99 in CA, where Trader Joe's does its own distribution . . . Everywhere else it is "Three Buck Chuck" ($2.99), since TJ has to pay a distributor.

We use Charles Shaw as our typical "house wine." One suggestion would be to buy a mixed case of the many reasonably priced TJ wines (>$5 a bottle), have a taste test or a bottle each night, then go back to TJ's next week and buy a case of your favorite.

                      Salud!

Arlene, just wanted to let you (and Frank) know that not all the TJs in NJ carry wine. I've been to the one in Wayne a few times and they don't carry wine (it's a very small TJ). Don't know about the one in Paramus or the coming-soon one in Edgewater.

I can still buy it for $5>$6 in ID. Costco has the big 1.5 liter size for $9 or $10.

The one in Westwood doesn't carry wine either. Rumor has it they are opening a new much larger TJs nearer to me and that it will have $3 buck chuck.

Yes, it's hard for businesses to get a liquor license in NJ. I guess we are lucky our TJs has one. I am close enough to walk to the TJs in Westfield. And it has plenty of wine
