OY I unwittingly touched off a bit of controversy for posting about this a few years ago. Que sera, sera.
If you want a really neat "gift" for someone, think about Heifer International.
What you can do at Heifer is buy something (usually an animal) that is donated to a family somewhere in need. Animals include heifers, goats, pigs, lambs, llamas, honey bees, water buffalo, rabbits. Heifer focuses on using the animals to create sustainable local economies, including training in husbandry. Our church features Heifer prominently in our alternative Christmas giving market; that's how I first learned of them.
If you're interested, check them out.
