This whole thread got me to wondering, what does happen to a person that rents out an exchange week and gets caught?

I had read on the Dis boards that the person could get their account locked, but does anybody really know for sure what happens? I'm curious. Does II or RCI give a person a chance first - because I'm sure that some people probably don't know they are not supposed to do it.

I think any adult would know that after being on the internet for just a few days. Trust is built in different ways. Then again, some folks are WAY too trusting and gullible. They're the ones that get hurt.

Thanks, Frank. It sounds like stiff penalties, then.

It would be nice if somebody got a warning if they honestly didn't know, though.

Bottom line as far as the exchange companies are concerned seems to be that, if somebody didn't bother to read the rules when they joined, they have to carry the can for any transgression. It's an unforgiving attitude but at least they can't then be accused of unequal treatment of members.
It's really a bit like members not taking out insurance and then complaining that the company won't credit the week back to them if they are unable to travel for any reason. The responsibility lies with the member.

Everyone on the Interenet does not know all the ropes. To relate to my OP, does not know that they should not trust others just because they are on the same forum.

To answer this, the first thing that goes is the offending member's online privileges. A note goes on their account and they have to conduct business through a Guide only. Their account is monitored.

That is the penalty even if they have only indicated they intend to violate the rule, but haven't actually violated it yet.

For severe offenses, which was the original intention of the rule and the only thing that was enforced for many years, the offender loses their exchange company membership altogether. They also lose confirmed exchanges, including those they have already sold. That draws in innocent third parties.

I know there are people from both OY and here in each of these categories.

Complications to the you shoulda known the rules so you and you alone are to blame for anything you do attitude is that newer timeshare owners really don't understand that, don't take the time to read all the fine print, are told exactly the opposite in many timeshare sales presentations, and the exchange companies let a lot of it slide for a long time.

So every now and then we have to visit this subject, to help the new folks, regardless of how it is the door gets opened.

Come to think of it, you obviously are thinking an impure thought. Your account will likely be monitored for awhile, until you quit thinking about stuff like that.

I notice the thread OY has gone about like this one, it becoming educational and informative, with a friend of TUG and TS4Ms entering the confessional, to give balance.
