  • Roomba Running out of battery after 45 minutes

    Hi all,

I was so excited to use my new roomba, so I charged it overnight and tried it this morning in a bedroom.

Unfortunately, after 45 minutes it stopped. I went up to see why, and it had stopped on one side of the room (not gone back to home base) and the red light was on, which I think means the battery is depleted.

Has anyone else had this problem?

    Thanks,

    Sharon

Sharon I had a charging issue the first time and called iRobot <and spoke to a real live English speaking representative> but the directions I used were exactly the ones from iRobot site:

Roomba charges for a short time, runs for a short time, then indicates that the battery needs to be charged
Your Roomba may be experiencing an issue where the battery is deeply discharged and may need to charge longer than the standard 2.5 hours. (or 6 hours if you have a standard charger)

If you have fully charged your Battery (the Roomba Power light is solid green) and it charging time was short (less than 20 minutes) and its run time was short (less than 20 minutes) you will need to do the following.

Reset the Roomba charging system. Do this by removing the Battery and holding down the “power” button for at least 5 seconds. Then reinstall the Battery.

Plug the Charger into Roomba (avoid using the Home Base if you have one so as to ensure the Roomba’s charging cycle is not interrupted.)

In Max mode, run the Roomba for one complete cycle without a Home Base present, to deplete the battery. Keep track of the runtime and if it has improved. If your Roomba does not have Max mode, run several Clean cycles until Roomba stops and plays the "dead battery" song.

I'd give this a try and if it doesn't fix it I'd call them

Thanks Lawren. I'll give your suggestions a try. (I did try to call customer service before I saw your response, but was on hold for close to 15 minutes and finally had to go.)

Mine is doing the same thing-- I didn't realize that wasn't normal! I am going to try Lawren's tips, too. Thanks!

How long should these run? I had the initial short life, so went through 5 of the run at Max, then recharge for 3-4 days cycles. It now runs about an hour, but I thought I read somewhere these would run for about 2 hrs. I want some feedback before I call the company. Thanks

If this keeps up I will have to create and moderate a Roomba forum.

You should NEVER have to charge for 3-4 days. If you have completely discharged your Roomba the next charge should take about 16 hours on the docking station.

Run time depends on your flooring.

I find if I run my robot on the middle level which is half tile/ half berber that it will go for about 90 minutes. If on the upper level which is mostly low pile it only goes for about 60 minutes.

This is on the normal clean cycle.

I can run it on each level each day with about 5 hours between cleanings to completely recharge.

If yours is running less than an hour on normal clean call iRobot. They are on eastern time. Call early in the day midweek for best response times.

We run ours twice a day. About 30-40 minutes in the morning to do our bedroom and bathroom. Then put it on the charger for 2 or 3 hours then run it on Max to do the rest of the house. It runs up to 2 hours on Max without a problem.

Is there a difference in this between models perhaps? Ours it the Discovery model.

Mine is the Discovery model too, so sounds like I need to call it in next week.

You're not suggesting we act like we're in a cult are you? If you search TS4MS for Roomba, it's in 21 threads, so.........!

                  Not at all!

                  Well maybe.

Dear old Dad. Is just entranced with his Discovery I sent him as a xmas present. He want to buy himself a Scooba.

My reply? "NO DAD! Dont do it we will send you one for your birthday.

                  DOD: Well why not?

Me: Because you are a SOB to buy for. and if you like your Roomba we will get you a Scooba.

DOD: I could be dead by then.

No Dad you won't die by April.

anyway if your Discovery is running much less than an hour by all means give iRobot a jingle. They were very helpful when I had to call.

I called iRobot this morning, and was politely informed that the 60 minutes was within their acceptable guidelines. She then suggested I continue to do a couple more of the full discharge & recharges, and call back if it doesn't improve. It's not clear to me what I will gain by calling again if the time doesn't improve from their already accepted 60 minutes. I'll keep my fingers crossed that it picks up time with the additional resets.
                    Thanks all for your input.

We had dinner with some friends last night who just bought a new house. We suggested both the Roomba and Scooba (big area of slate floors). We didn't realize we were going on so about these iRobots until I mentioned the Roomba costumes (no we don't have one of those) and how there seems to be a Roomba cult thing. She seriously looked at me and said "I think you're a part of it".

But both friends said they were going out to buy Roombas this week so I wish we were making commission

Did you explain that the cult you are in is actually a timeshare cult??

this topic is almost 11 years old - I think the problem has had some kind of solution by now.
