  • Cool rock-history auction at eBay

Just wanted to post this because I think it's so interesting. Great story, and darned good return on a 75-cent investment!

thanks for posting, very interesting! I wonder what the high bid will be? Hard to believe anyone would pay that kind of money for an LP with an unfixable scratch!!

Does it have an unfixable scratch? I didn't even see that. They could probably fix it digitally. DH was saying, "Has the Velvet Underground sold enough records in forty YEARS to make that much money?" And I guess the buyers are thinking they can clear the rights and release it as a CD, but I think they could have a long struggle with that one.

On the other hand, it seems like a better deal than the Virgin Mary on a piece of toast.

It has TWO scratches. "The main flaws are a skip about 35 seconds into the first song (European son), & a skip about 10 seconds into the eighth song (I'm Waiting for the man). Digital trickery could be used to smooth out the skip on the 8th song fairly easily, but the skip on the first track may prove a bit more difficult. "

And the first track, European Son, is the one that is completely different from the released version, one of the most interesting attributes of the recording (aside from its existence, which I guess is what's bringing in the real big bucks...)

The bid is at $155,501+ right now. Glitter, you have to let us know what wins it!

The bidding history is interesting, the seller has cancelled quite a few bids, and several high bidders have gotten cold feet!

                  Glitter and others,

If you are sniping this auction, what is the maximum bid that will win it, hypothetically of course?

I don't have any knowledge of how much something like this unusual artifact would go for, so I will say my snipe would be $307,309.99.

Look, Mike. When I'm sniping, I try to play these things close to the vest. I don't really care to give away my secrets.

But seriously, folks. I think the bidders are getting cold feet. It zoomed up and up and then ground almost to a halt a day or so ago. So I wonder if the final bid will be very much higher. I bet there are a lot of people out there sweating and thinking, "Why did I bid so much? Please, please, let somebody else bid more! Pleeeeeaassseee!"

Does anybody even have a record player anymore??? I was talking to my kids the other day and mentioned going to the "record store." They had no idea what I was talking about...

                          wacky,

I know that would be me! I had enough anxiety buying a Roomba without my wife giving me the okay! I would be having a heart attack about now with less than 30 minutes to go.

Ummm, Arlene? This is a $155,000 record. No one's going to be playing it on a home record player. Unless they want some nice music playing while they eat their Virgin Mary toast.

Anyway, we still have a turntable, although my DH is the only one who uses it (I always hated putting the needle down). And there's actually a crowd of music people who feel that vinyl has a warmer sound, so there's still a market for high-end turntables.
