  • Supporting your local retailers

I know sometimes it's hard to shop at the smaller local places when the lure of the The Mall is so strong, and the prospect of discounts greater at the meg-chain places and big department stores.

But this year I decided that I am going to try hard to get whatever I can at our local small businesses/clothing stores/bookstore/etc...

It is saving me a tremendous amount of crowd/parking/lines aggravation; I think it is well worth any slight increase in cost (let's face it, not too many great bargains at the big places pre-xmas anyway), and the local merchants really appreciate it (and need it for their survival). And the ones near me also offer free giftwrapping!!

Yes, I have ordered a few things online, too. But mostly things I can't get elsewhere, like specialty skateboard shoes for DS14, and the 'must have new Jordan basketball shoe' for DS12 that our local place d/n carry.

    Avery,

I couldn't agree more. I always shop in the local stores, and even more so at Christmas. I find the prices to be decent, and anyway, the convenience is worth and any slight increase.

There are quite a few shops by us that have nicer, and more unique stuff than you can find in the mall. The stores are all clean, and neatly organized. And, the people go out of their way to help you. It's a pleasure.

My daughter will wind up dragging me to Roosevelt Field, when she gets home. She likes the mall stores, much more than I do. For the most part, I'm not a mall person.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

We stick with Costco for most things....and we are done. They have good prices and the best return policy of any retailer I know of. We do support local retailers when they are competitive and offer more service. We stay away from the malls.

I have flat out REFUSED to step foot in that mall, or anywhere near Old Country Road, until after the New Year. It is an absolute Zoo, with some very nasty animals...

I did my mall shopping already. Well actually, I'm done with all of my shopping. And I told my sister that if she sends Mom (who arrives tomorrow) to me with any shopping left to do, I'll kill her (Sis, not Mom).

I know, and I'm not looking forward to going. My DD shops at Urban Outfitters, and I don't think there is another one anywhere around us. I promised that I would get her a few things that she could pick-out, when she got home.

            What was I thinking.....

              Sure, rub it in..............

You finished all your shopping, and you're done decorating. Oh, and you've mailed out all your cards, including a letter, no less.......Did you make Christmas dinner already, too.

I bet mom is coming with a very long shopping list.

                  Angela,

Your DD can WALK to the Urban Outfitters on 14th street and 6th Avenue. She hardly needs to torture you over a trip to UO...

Unfortunately the "monstrosity" aka Palisades mall has pretty much killed off many of our local stores.

Our BJs is there too. Usually I can run in and out of there for essentials. Not today. There wasn't a parking spot to be had.

I really hate that place. It is UGLY as sin.We are so close to Bergen County and there blue laws that Sundays are really, really bad. Always. But much much worse around the holidays.

I think the only reason that hasn't happened here is we have TOO MANY FRIGGIN PEOPLE on Long Island (especially Nassau County), so there are always some scraps of business for the little guy. And Angela's right, some of the smaller shops do have a more unique selection.

A husband who prepares Christmas Eve, & Christmas Day dinner. Prime rib, and lasagna, Oh, and let's not forget the Yorkshire pudding. Now you're really rubbing it in...........

Well, as long as you don't have your tree up yet, I forgive you.

We have to pick her up tomorrow night. Maybe I should take her to UO on 14th street, at that point, instead of Roosevelt Field. It can't be as bad dealing with Old Country Rd., and the mall. Thanks, I think that is what I will do.
