  • Let's talk...beds

This summer we stayed in a resort we liked very much, but the bed squeaked like mad and the mattress was really, really uncomfortable. I thought I could sleep on anything, but as I've gotten older...hmm, seems I can't!

Does anybody have any clever tricks for making an uncomfortable bed more comfortable? Is it worth it to travel with a sleeping bag or one of those egg-crate things? Are Aerobeds comfortable? Are they heavy? Should I look into getting one and dragging it along? Not sleeping much for a week definitely took a lot of the fun out of vacation.

Did you talk to anyone there about the condition of the bed? We've had very good luck with beds, other than sofa beds, and we find that many places offer egg crate foam mattress pads which should help a lot. We've finally started taking our pillows along, when we drive someplace, and that makes a world of difference, unless we're going to a Marriott or a Hilton. We haven't gotten to the point where we tote them on planes, though.
An uncomfortable bed can surely ruin your vacation. Sorry to hear that happened to you. Jean

Yes, we mentioned it to them and they were polite but basically had an "whaddya want us to do about it" attitude. It was odd because the units were very well maintained overall.

The squeaking made everything worse because the floors were really thin and if I tried to find a comfortable spot, I woke up my kids sleeping downstairs!

Two summers ago I took my good pillow to a rental and that was great...except then I forgot it and had to beg the owner of the rental to find it and mail it back to me. She did, eventually, but it was definitely a royal pain for her!

When we travel and can take our pillows (nice down filled ones) I put a brightly colored pillowcase on it so I can spot it when I do a glance around the room to make sure we've gotten all our 'stuff'.

That's a good idea...although this pillow did have one of our pillowcases on it, so I should have spotted it when I did the final check. I think I'm going to write my name and phone number on the pillow in Sharpie if I take it anywhere again!
