My father in his younger days was an avid hunter, but he didn't hunt much is the last 20 years before his death. I have several boxes of shot gun and 22 cal shells that I haven't done anything with since he passed away almost four years ago. What would be the correct way to get rid of them? Are they still good?

I just asked DH...avid hunter...who suggested:
First of all, DH has used shells that are several years old and they are still OK, providing they have been kept in the house and out of extreme humidity, etc.
giving/selling to someone who could use them
Take them to a gun store - or nearby hunt club- to see if they will give you anything for them.
For disposing: Call your local Sheriff or Police Department and they will tell you where to take them.
Too bad you don't live closer...I'm sure we could add to our collection

Also, depending on how old they are, their condition, and the rarity, if the shells are in boxes, the boxes could be valuable as collectibles. People collect everything! I know people who have made a lot of money selling shell boxes, bullet displays, etc.
I am an avid trapshooter, but I am by no means an expert in bullets. I do know how to reload shotgun shells (I can pull the handle, lol) but that's about the extent of my ballistics know-how. I would think the .22 shells would be still be fine since they are in metal casings. The shotgun shells might be fine, too, but I would think it might depend somewhat on the type of hull used (paper, plastic), where they've been stored, etc.
Make sure they aren't of value first, then I would sure follow JoAnn's suggestions. There should be a gun club in your area, and there are always people there would love freebies (or you might be even be able to make a little on them).
