  • One of my favorite places to ride.

Visitors will delight in the ever growing haven of open space in Westchester County known as Rockefeller State Park Preserve. Approximately 30 miles from the hustle and bustle of New York City, the Preserve is an idyllic spot for strolling, jogging, horseback riding, cross country skiing, and snowshoeing. With 180 recorded species of birds and its IBA (Important Bird Area) designation by the National Audubon Society, the Preserve is a must visit area for birders. In season, licensed anglers enjoy fishing for bass in the 22 acre Swan Lake and for brown trout in the Pocantico River. In addition the beauty of the Preserve inspires many artists and photographers to memorialize its scenic vistas. While in the park, stop in the Preserve's Gallery across from the Visitor Center. Its rotating exhibits feature the art of local artists. Within walking distance are the Preserve's nearest neighbors – The Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture, a nonprofit farm and educational center designed to demonstrate, teach and promote sustainable, community-based food production and Blue Hill restaurant.

These numerous outdoor opportunities exist due to the foresight and generosity of the Rockefeller family. The Preserve land is comprised of a portion of the Rockefeller family estate in Pocantico Hills given to the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation in 1983. Since the Preserve's inception, additional bequeaths have extended its size by 488 acres to today's total of 1,233 acres.

The most notable feature of the Preserve is the system of carriage roads built by John D. Rockefeller Sr. and John D. Rockefeller Jr. Designed to complement the landscape, the carriage roads, many of which are handicapped accessible, allow visitors to experience and enjoy the natural wonders of the area. These scenic paths wind through wetlands, woodlands, meadows, and fields and past streams, rivers, and lakes. They traverse wood and stone bridges, including the first triple arch bridge in America. One road passes by the foundation of Rockwood Hall, once the 220 room home of William Rockefeller. Its Olmstead designed landscape with its panoramic view of the Hudson River remains a spot of beauty for all who visit. Trail maps (with distance and grade descriptions) of all the carriage roads and equestrian permits are available at the Preserve Office. Hunting, swimming, biking, snowmobiling, camping, and open fires are strictly prohibited.

I forgot my camera today but this park is only about a 20 minute trailer-ride for us. A $45 equestrian permits buys you 12 months of access.
We once saw a bald eagle flying up the Hudson from there.

For those of you who don't know, Olmstead designed NYCity's Central Park.

I am grateful to the Rockefeller family. Between this beautiful preserve and St John, USVI they have made wonderful and lasting gifts to us.

I work in the office building nestled in Rockefeller St Pk.

    Lawren,

After 9/11 the company I work for began to look for a place to locate a large cross section of employees out of Midtown Manhattan. Seems that management had a problem with 5000 employees located in a 2 square block area.

So after a long anticipated search the company decided to purchase 40 acres and the former Latin American Headquarters of IBM, next to Phelps Hospital.

Yes indeed this place is a beautiful nature preserve. I see all sorts of wildlife outside my office window!

Well that's a darn sight better than looking at other buildings.

Yes it is gorgeous. Do you ever go into the preserve at lunch?

There is a rental stable close by that let's people take the horses to the park as well.

Do they give riding lessons there? One of my daughters rides and has taken lessons at Bergen Equestrian Center in Leonia. We're looking for a summer day camp or residential camp not too far from us but we don't like the program at BEC.

That would be great. BEC does English lessons but she went to a residential camp summer before last that was Western. She prefers Western. She's intermediate level.

Lawren, have you ever been to Shenandoah Crossing? Is it just trail rides or do they do lessons or camp as well?
