Here I sit on Jury Duty....hey they have WiFi now!!

    Here I sit on Jury Duty....hey they have WiFi now!!

    I could only miss and extend Jury Duty for so long...here I am again in the Jury assembly room waiting for the call. And they have WiFi...woo hoo.

    I have never actually sat through a trial...some day I would like to but I am too good at excuses.

    Any good excuses to get out of JD? Have you ever sat through a trial as a juror?

    I am usually dismissed when I tell them that I have bought and sold timeshares before. They either think I am too stupid for having bought a timeshare so I am not fit for jury duty. Or they think that since I sold them I am a liar and thief. Either way...everone feels this way.

    If that doesn't work then I always ask the prosecutor if the defendant donated to the DA's campaign or not...that way I will know if the Prosecutor is really going to press his case or not...it doesn't take long after that before I get my walking papers.

    Aw, comeon Red, they have WiFi, why not just serve? I think if you get on a case you might actually enjoy it. Or at least find it interesting...

        I've been a foreman on a DUI and a jury member on a Disorderly Conduct.

        One time I was seated in the jury box on drug dealing case. The prosecutor bounced me after the first round of questioning, after I offered my views on drug laws.

        Too bad. Although I have significant issues with our drug policies, the rule of law ranks near the top of my civic values.

          I have served on 5 juries in my lifetime. 3 as a full fledged and disclosed lawyer. It's a fascinating experience that everyone should experience.

                Wi Fi, You lucky dog and your getting paid too. Did you bring your lap top or are you picking it up on a PC Phone. I did not think you could bring in either one into jury duty. I remenber years back that they took away my plane cell phone.

                  I have my big 17" screen Dell laptop and my own computer station. Orange County has long had computer stations all around the jury assembly room with power and phone jacks for dial up. But I cannot handle dial up. They recently installed free WiFi so here I am.

                  We get screened at the door just like at an airport.

                    When I lived in Calif I didn't get picked from the jury pool because I said I didn't believe in the death penalty (and that's true). When I moved to metro Atlanta and registered to vote I got tapped for jury duty within a few months, and I ended up getting picked to judge on a road rage trial. So stupid, as nobody got hurt during the incident, and personal property wasn't damaged either. It was just a bunch of name-calling at the time, so why did it end up in court? It was imho a waste of taxpayers' money and court time for such a case to even go to trial.

                      John, I should have asked what city. People had PCs and used the stations while waiting. I also saw a computer screen on the Judge's desk and was wondering what she was using it for because she also had lots of papers in front of her. She looked at the screen a lot.

                      This was the second Judge as I watched the court in session at a preliminary hearing too after we were dismissed from our case because the attorneys settled during lunch. The jury was picked and the Judge had interviewed them but the attorney hadn't questioned anyone yet. We all had to come back and were released right after we came in. It was an interesting experience for me but I have the time.

                        Well that was uneventful. We got there at 7:45 a.m. Along with over a hundred other people waiting all morning for some action were no trials by 11 a.m. and one large group got to leave early for lunch(we thought they were lucky but NO). Then we heard they wont need a jury until tomorrow so they let three large groups go home (me included) after 3 1/2 hours of reading and lounging. There were still a lot of people there and all the people who have to return after lunch too. They will have to hang around in case there is a possible trial(s) this afternoon or tomorrow.

                          In contrast, here in Houston, our jury duty is one day. They have one group come in by 8 am and a second at 12:30 pm. If you are not selected that day, you're done. Good bye.

                          It's always better to be in the 8 am group in case you have to go to a court to be questioned for selection. You get out by 5 pm. If you are in the 12:30 pm group and you go to a court, you can be there very late. One time I was part of a 100+ panel on a 4 defendant murder trial. I was like no. 93 and was never going to be picked. We didn't get out until after 10:30 p.m. that night. Wooo that was rough.

                          Also, understand that you are also being checked out for any outstanding warrants and convictions when you go to jury duty. Most states have laws that do not allow felons to serve as jurors so the jury court people check out the criminal background of every one of the potential jurors.

                          On that late night saga, the lady next to me had a hot check warrant out for her arrest that she didn't even know about. The judge called her up and a couple of deputies and the judge took her into his chambers. She came out white as a sheet. Turned out that the lady had an automatic draft against her bank account with an exercise place. The lady had moved to a new bank and informed the exercise place who didn't take all the steps to draft her new account. There was one NSF draft and they filed a hot check charge against her. The judge was great. He got the asst DA to drop the charge and got it all straighten out for the lady right then and there. He then told all of us about how all of us had been checked out in the police records for outstanding warrants and convictions. Surprise!
