  • $19.95 Hi Speed & & & - ????

Presently we pay $29.95 for dial-up AOL. Using the phone and being on line simultaneously doesn’t happen.

Verison offers high speed internet for $19.95. They claim AOL is free with this service, and the phone can be used while on-line. There’s an up front cost and a contract of a year, etc, etc.

Believing that something for nothing is usually not all it seems to be, I’m suspicious.

I’m sure this has been kicked around while I wasn’t listening, but any pros and cons from the membership would be appreciated.

I assume you are asking about DSL service. However, Verizon also has a new fiber optic service called FiOS. I have been a Verizon DSL customer for several years. I am happy with the service. It has been very reliable for me.

Yes, you only need one phone line, and you will still be able to talk while online. You will be provided filters that you will need to put on each phone.

I understand that AOL is now free and that you can still use your AOL e-mail address. However, I haven't been an AOL customer for over 10 years, so you may want to verify this with someone else.

You don't say what speed of service you are being offered at that price, but even the lowest speed DSL service will be much faster than dial up. One other thing, DSL requires you to be close to a switching station. I assume the Verizon rep has already verified this.

        Robert GO FOR IT!
The 768 will be SO much faster. and more reliable. and for at least the one year cheaper. Installation is painless.
I've had DSL for as long as it has been available here. You can talk and be on the computer at the same time.
If you have things read over the phone by your utility companies or an alarm company you must inform them of the change to DSL so they can make the changes necessary to continue to do so.

JFYI that $19.95 will most likely go up to $29.95 at the end of your contract but you will be getting more than you are getting for the same price today.

And Yes AOL will be free.

I am sure others of this household would appreciate the phone being freed up, but not having it while I'm computing can be a solitude godsend.
          I'm going to miss that.

We switched from cable to Verizon DSL almost 4 years ago and never looked back. Cheaper and more reliable, in our experience. People say it's slower than cable, but it's not a difference that I notice.

You need to have your line checked forst to see if it will handle the higher speed. Very hard to downgrade your service once you've ordered.

DSL is slower than cable, but it depends on how many users are on the cable. I am pretty sure DSL is a constant rate, if too many are on the same cable area, it can actually go slower than dsl.

Distance seems to play an important roll for DSL. Ours was so much slower than what we were supposed to get and paid for. The reason was that we were too far away from the Verizon office.

We have fiber optics now and it is a lot faster. It is really fast when you upload or download large files. FiOS (fiber optics) is also by Verizon so we had no choice but to disconnect EarthLink DSL after so many years.

I could not bring myself to disconnect the EarthLink service completely so have their cheapest package today. I like them because they are very secure and have "anonymous email addresses". It is available too for no-members for a very small monthly charge.
