  • Why Do Some People Not Use Search Engines?

    Like Google.

The answer to almost anything is available to almost anyone.

There is one level of people who are totally computer-challenged. They don't even use the Internet for anything. To them fact is whatever they or those around them decide it is.

Then there is a level of people who know about the computer and the Internet, at least enough to be on forums like this. Why is it that some of these people do not use search engines, but rely on complete stangers to answer questions?

Why are some reluctant to use the simplest tools to get information?

What is simple to one is new and confusing to others.

I think that explains those that don't use the Internet at all, but not the others. It is easier to use Google than it is an Internet forum. With a search engine you just type in what you want to learn about whereas with a forum you have to log-in, selct a forum, ask a question, post, wait, reply, post, wait, etc.

I tend to use forums to confirm things I've found elsewhere, or direct me, or where I know a particular person will know what I want to know, because I know their backgorund, but it is not my sole source of information.

Keep in mind that Google saves your searchs. I try not to use Google because of that reason.

oh, you mean those inquiries like, what's the weather like in Bear,DE in Feb? Maybe it's a Forum "bonding" thing and really don't have anything else to ask.

I've asked a few bone-head questions now and then.

Maybe they don't like Big Brother tracking their every move and knowing about their interests (especially if they have "controversial" interests).

I know that you can opt out with Yahoo and assume you can do the same with Google too. They will not track every move in that case. You will have to do this with every computer and not only one. I love using the search engines.

I am a search-aholic, anything anyone questions I like to rush to my computer to find out. Almost no one I know bothers, or don't have the success I do looking. I also like to ask at forum, to get a conversation with someone. It adds to the content of the forum-gets people involved. The answers you get are from direct knowledge of being there usually.

I forgot to address this in previous post.

Excellent question. I've pondered that many times. They ask such silly things that they could easily find out for themselves.

I wonder, too, about some of the posters who have small children and ask "what to do with a 6 mts. old and 2 year old in Las Vegas?" type questions. I wonder what they typically do with them in Kansas City. If they don't have full time nannies, they must know what the children are capable of; they must know that there are children of the same age in the place they are visiting and that parents in those "new" places do the same things with the children that are typically done in Kansas City. Amazing.

I think maybe they are members of the half of the population that doesn't vote? They can't make a decision? Once the search is over there are decisions to be made. Google has tried to address these persons with the I'm Feeling Lucky button.

It's getting harder all the time to know what country I'm in.

Bill, if I want to know what's going on in Bear, I drop my sister an email. Wonder how close you live to her. :-)

I fear they are members of the population who DO vote.

Google, I need to type in key word, and if I don't careful, I may need to go through 1000 links before I found my answer. By the way, all these links are internet site, they are no more reliable between each other. A site with law in the name does make it lawyer.

On the other hand, if I have little idea what I looking for, just know it is a med question, and I know my neighbor has all kind of sickness, I will believe they know better than avg. MD.

Hang in on this forum, sometime may mkae you think these people should know something based on their experience. And you don't have to figure out the best key word to ask.

Just simple example, if I ask where can I get a coupon for ice cream, I bet this site is more powerful than google.
