I just experienced this with a friend. She was going to hold a memorial service for her late husband and had contacted a Reverend for the ceremony (I was there to help) and tried to e-mail her. Well, she had the name wrong and now went into a tizzy trying to find a phone number, etc. I asked her what the church was called, googled and got the right name. She DOES have a computer but can't even e-mail without problems.

Why Do Some People Not Use Search Engines?

I have checked facts, recipes, building information by searching and then when I get a clearer idea of what I want to use or need look for ideas or opinions of people that have actual experience.
I think bonding and trust come into play.

Could it be that sometimes people just want to "chat", so they just ask a question like you might over coffee. They may just want to see what their "friends" on the tshare4ums boards would say. But I'm sure some of the people on the boards are tired of answering the same questions over and over. I'm sure that I'm as guilty of that as anyone.Vicki

Attended a Focus group held by Marriott a few weeks back. All of those poor suckers bought direct from Marriott. They paid full priice for the sales slime commish.
I bit my tongue the whole time. I just want to scream TS4MS, and TUG!!!!
I got the impression that all of the other people had PC's with broadband access. So why did these people not understand the inner workings of TS's? I just think they were not that savvy.
But you know that is a good thing for us. See somebody has to pay the full price for a TS. But not me or you right?
That's why read these TS4MS, and TUG etc.
I love my PC's and the internet. Hallelujah for the GOOGLE, and YAHOO!Flying at MACH4 +

Then there is a level of people who know about the computer and the Internet, at least enough to be on forums like this. Why is it that some of these people do not use search engines, but rely on complete stangers to answer questions?

The person writing that in... mustve been a gambler traveling to Vegas, dont you think... and since kids are NOT allowed in casinos, they may have wanted to know how to place them in a day care environment <<<Hmmm>>>
I, myself, use Google to find out the most amazing things.. like I recently traced a Welsh fishing village from a name on an antique cup and saucer set sold as a souviner there early last century. It is also amazing at tracing lineage and ancestral homes.. esp. in England, where my coworker found his ancestral home from 1570 and visited in part of a whirlwind tour last summer.
I still love my forums and bb's ---for being in timesharing, it is imperative I use these 'connections' to the best brain in the 'business', and the resort review are very revealing, like taking a pre-trip, virtual reality trip with pics, even. Keep on googling... and searching... BEVBeverly M. Hook

I already did.
For some, like my neighbors, I believe it is because they do not really want to know any more than they have decided the facts to be.
For some, they just dunno why they didn't.
Someone I know recently bought a vacuum cleaner on QVC, because it was a good name and she just got caught up in the moment (the key to QVC's success). After it had arrived and she had used it a week, she researched it on the Internet. It got the lowest rating on Consumer Reports and the one that was rated best was half the price. She's ready to send it back, on the 30-day guarantee.
Her answer as to why she didn't google it first, "I dunno."
The ex-sig-other we are helping settle our neighbors affairs calls me almost every day and asks me to look on the Internet for something because I know how to do it.
How much is a longhorn mount worth? How much is a bass (musical instrument, not fish) worth? How much is a '94 Buick Century worth? How much is a '90 Mercedes SEL worth? How can the house be transferred to me without going through probate? How can the cars transfer to me without going through probate? How can he leave money to a daughter without it going through probate? What are my duties as personal representative? Find me a good estate attorney. Find me a route and motel rooms home. Is it gonna snow today? How about tomorrow? Is it going to be cold? . . . . . .

Not that a person has to reply to someone who replies to them on a forum, but take the case of the person OY looking for a one-night rental in between Mizner (I believe) and a week in Orlando. They are looking for some place to stay Feb. 3. For whatever reason they also wanted it to be on the left coast, not exactly the shortest route to Orlando. They asked the same thing on two forums.
They are asking for what they are asking at the worst possible time of year on the left coast.
But, since we have done that a lot, had to fill in a night between weeks or a night or three before a week starts, and had just done exactly that, I posted all the Hotwire results from Naples to Sarasota to Tampa to Orlando, giving my picks.
Normally when I do that I will post the links, so that they can go look. Better yet, I am hoping they will see how easy it is to do it themselves without saying something rude like, "It's really easy to do it yourself." But, I understand how saying that is not a disservice to the person it is directed toward. It may help them to use these sites more effectively.
Why feed someone fish and satisfy their hunger for just a day, when you can teach them to fish?
In those two threads they have continued idle chatter with others, but have not ackowledged the information I gave them, or the hour I spent doing it.
I hate to get further disillusioned from my youthful idealism, but I am finding that there are a lot of people in the world who are only takers, with no gratitude in them. They do not even realize they are the way they are, proabably having been the way they are so long.
And yeah, that relates to the OFs we have for neighbors, the ones who took my 17 months of work to get our road turned over to the County, only to turn on me, as if their parents never taught them any manners and showing no gratitude whatsoever. Every time the County snowplow or mower comes down the road, which it didn't the first 40 years, I am rewarded in knowing that my gift is one that goes on giving.
In my book, if someone spent 17 months of their life, worked out all the compromises and dealt with 26 property owners and the country officials, got 700 feet of easement from an absentee owner, did it all at their own expense, and got the job done when no one else ever could, that person would be entitled to a free you-can-be-an-asshole-for-life certificate (if they wanted to be).RCI Member Since 24-Aug-1989/150-plus Exchanges***THE TIMESHARE GRIM REAPER~~~Exchanging/Searching/SW Florida/MO/AR/IA/Consumer Advocacy/Estate Planning/Sports/Boating/Fishing/Golf/Lake-living/Retirement****Sometimes ya just gotta be a dick
