I'm betting lots of their housekeeping staff and maintenance staff are Hispanic, so the resort is just dealing with the current realities of their operation. Btw, if you look at the other side of the coin, their job listings also infer that Hispanics who won't/can't learn English need not apply.

The job requirements in this county should be:

      Must have good communication skills.

Prefer ability to speak or learn other languages.

      Not

what good are communication skills if they are not in the right language? I don't see any problem with the listed requirements, many jobs require bi-lingual skills.

Why is this unfair? Speaking Spanish and English are skills needed for the particular job they are trying to fill.

Some jobs require that the employee can type. Some jobs require that the employee be able to lift 50 pounds. Some jobs require that the employee be able to fly an airplane. Is it unfair not to hire someone who cannot type? Who cannot lift 50 pounds? Who cannot fly an airplane?

Put another way: I'm traveling to Spain. I realize that most of the hotel employees will not be able to speak English and I am nervous about communicating with them. Then I arrive and discover that the front desk clerk speaks English! How happy am I?

            Why is this unfair?

            Example:

For someone who was born & raised in the Shenandoah Valley area
of Virginia and grew up in public schools many years ago getting a
high school education was basically what you needed to get a job

That person paid for his/her home & retires on Social Security
They may want to get a job at a resort such as Massanutten
to supplement their income and/or health insurance

Never learning Spanish - how can they even get a job as a
Driver or Housekeeping Manager - That is what I call Unfair!

Hopefully all US kids/adults will now get a better education
High School Diploma - College Degree - English and Spanish

From reading the actual job ads it would seem that most of the vacancies requiring English and Spanish are supervisory roles in the housekeeping and maintenance areas. From my admittedly limited experience of cleaners, maids etc at timeshare and hotels in the US most seem to be Hispanic and therefore generally speak better Spanish than English. A supervisor is going to have to communicate in Spanish to the staff and in English to the management. It therefore seems eminently sensible to employ somebody who can speak both languages for those roles.

I'm having a hard time figuring out why you are upset over this. The website lists 15 positions available and only 5 require the ability to speak Spanish & English. They are all positions involving supervision or close contact with a level of employees who historically in the hotel or resort industries are Spanish speaking and quite often have limited English skills.

Saying that this is unfair to someone who has never learned Spanish is the same as saying it's unfair to someone who never went to Med School being precluded from applying for a job as a Doctor.

And I bet they require you to be able to type more than 63 characters in a line!

                    It's a Feature, Not a Problem!

Maybe English-only speaking senior citizens would be well served to learn a second language, to potentially increase cognitive function and maybe even help delay or offset conditions related to aging, like Alzheimers. Check this out:
