I'm going to hazard a wild guess here. I suspect that most readers of this thread don't have a problem with a resort in Mexico requiring that certain positions require an ability to speak English.

Would that not be unfair to people who live in say, Cabo or Cancun, and who only - read - write - and speak - Spanish
but would like to work at Mayan Palace or a Royal or Pueblo Bonito or ....

      Sharon,
      Do you feel better now?

Now that we're in the tub, I'd like to add the following:

Most of us don't give a rat's ass about whether somebody uses correct grammar, spelling, and so forth. Its a Bulletin Board. Content is more important than preciseness. I'd rather have somebody share a thought they are having than not do so out of fear of being corrected.

As an aside, on various boards I often write prolly instead of probably. I know the difference. I really do. But prolly is easier to write, and "back in the day" that's what many of us used. Its not used as often now, but I'll prolly find it a hard habit to break.

I, for one, really appreciate the grammar reference. It is not a distinction I understood previously, and is a common error made by many.

          Thanks, Sharon!

My grammer died about 50 years ago. I barely remember her.

A direct comparison between the Spanish / English speaker requirement in the situation stated here with the recent influx of Polish workers into the UK. Many of these people can speak English but will certainly understand requests / instructions better if they are given to them in their native language.
Therefore it would make sense for an employer with a large number of Polish employees to want supervisory staff who are fluent in both languages.
An employer must be free to employ the people who are best for their business. They have specific needs to address and having identified those needs advertise for people who fit the requirements.
As has been said earlier, airline pilots must know how to fly; taxi drivers hopefully have driving licences. These are job specific requirements - what is the problem. Would you want to be treated by somebody claiming to be a doctor but having never been through medical training??

Hey Fern, it's a good thing I didn't use "sumpin" instead of "somthing" in a prior (or is it "previous"?) post I made on this thread!

(Just kidding...the Spanish word for "colon" is the same as the English. Got ya goin' for a minute, didn't I?)

Hi Glitter, bet ya didn't think you'd see me here

I cringed when I saw the topic this morning but didn't open it...but I couldn't resist when I saw SO many responses.

YIKES, this has turned into a free for all! - I just can't decide who to 'dis'

The world is changing - distance is shrinking, we are all changing, no more 'white bread' families - there are a lot of 'heinz 57' people/couples/families/schools/companies/towns/cities/nations...

What was good 50 years ago doesn't sit so well by todays standards. (however correct grammar is always appreciated)
