What's the Weather Like?

What's the weather like (where we're going when we're going to be there)?

How many times have we seen that question, normally asked several weeks, or months before the trip?

Then someone says they were there the same time of year and it was real warm, someone else says they were there the same time of year and it was real cold, and someone else answers with the averages for the days in question.

Isn't all that just futility?

Last year this time it was in the high 70's and low 80's here, and I played golf 6 times in two weeks. The next few days the highs are going to be in the 40's and the lows in the teens. Yes, the Easter Bunny is going to have frost on his eggs.

Since most timeshare vacations are for 1 week, and if you make it two weeks you will probably take in 99% of them, wouldn't it make more sense to go to AccuWeather or Weather.com or The Weather Channel the day before you leave, and then pack accordingly?

I agree Jim. Technology has allowed for predicting the weather quite accurately. To not check the forecast isn’t lucrative.

All last week, working the new landscape was lovely... 65 to 85.

All the Spring things are blooming. Daffodil, Forsythia, Azalea, red bud, dogwood... even the ferns and May apple have popped up.

At 6 this morning; 33 degrees and snow.

Amazingly few people posess "common" sense.

However, some localities do posess very unique weather vagaries. For example: Go to SCal coastal and it is a nice comfy mid 70s. Go 10 miles inland and it's 105.

Probably folks just reaching out and not being lazy. Think about it. You are meeting someone you don't have a relationship with....what do you talk about over drinks, etc? THE WEATHER!

Can't predict the future but Weather Underground has great historical weather info on their trip planner page. Just input the dates you're interested in and you'll get what the weather was like each year for about 5-10 prior years.

In support of JLB's 'futility' argument regarding the weather question.

Over the last weekend we had temperatures in the high 70's, when the seasonal average is high 50s to low 60s. Temperature today is back down to mid 60s. Also saw on the news that snow has been falling on the east coast of the US. I suspect neither is typical for the time of year, but at least visitors to the UK could dress more lightly than they expected. Visitors to the US might have had more of a shock

Regarding averages, if you had one foot in a bucket of ice water, and the other foot in a bucket of boiling water, you would not, on the average, be comfortable.

I agree! Heck, even with all that fancy-pants computer modeling the Weather Channel and local forecasters still can't get it right just a few days in advance. Case in point...we had a big rain storm last Thursday morning in South Beach Miami where I was vacationing. Fri the 13th was clear and sunny and warm. And they were predicting on all the weather forecasts locally and the Weather Channel nationally that the entire weekend would be sunny and warm/hot in Miami. Well, yesterday they got some big rains again...and that bad forecasting probably spoiled alot of Miamians weekend plans if they were counting on Sunday for fun in the sun.

When it comes to storm prediction, the only thing I trust completely is my own sky-gazing and air-smelling ways...and my dog's keen sense of change in barometric pressure.

However, I think it is reassuring for some to reach out to others, on a forum like this, to chat about the weather, yes, even a year in advance. Sometimes someone wants that personal touch, a sort of: "hey, what did you experience when you were there." Often the conversation adds more than weather tips.

Okey dokey, since I'm feeeling like I need to be touched, you know, personally, what will the weather be like on Grand Cayman January 5-12, 2008, and at Siesta Key January 12-19, 2008?

Bear in mind I do not care what the weather will be like in Sarasota; only Siesta Key.

And, really, only at the beach at 6414 Midnight Pass Road. I don't care about the weather next door, cuz we won't be there.

This is the single question that annoys me the most, at one time I was more active in derision. Maybe you have seen one of my posts on this before.

There are so many places to get weather averages, so what is the weather like equates to me, I am stupid and need to know ....

And, you are right averages are just that as are probabilities just probabilities. Prepare mainly for the average and adjust for the current situation seems reasonable.
