  • Floor refinishing dilemma...

Contractor says we have to vacate for four days to get the floors refinished. No more vacations left until summer, and they won't work over a weekend...

Do you think we can paint first, then do the floors over the summer? Or should we hold off on the painting until after the floors are done? I have heard the floor job can be very messy, and am worried it will ruin the paint job...

Avery....I would wait to do the floors until after you paint.

I have the same problem with my floors. I have wood floors in Dining, living room, and staircase up to bedrooms, as well as hall floors. In order to get them re-finished, we need to vacate. No way to get to the bedrooms, to sleep, shower, etc.

If you use water-based products, the time is cut in half. Some do not think that they are as good, but they have come a long way, and we use them quite a bit, at this point.

PS....It will probably only ruin the bottom molding. They tend to hit the bottom molding with their machines. That can be touched up, pretty easily. I worry more about getting paint on the new floors. If the painting is being done by professionals, that's less likely to happen.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

Floors aren't anywhere as messy as they used to be. Paint first.

        Avery,

Is there a way that they can do your living room & dining room, separate from your hallways?

You can stay out of those rooms, then only have to leave when they do your hallways. If they are being done.

PS...We always have the walls done first, then do the floors. Same with carpeting, walls first.

That is a great idea, but I think when we were discussing the timing he mentioned that it was a possibility but would cost more. I will double check, though.

But if we're doing the walls first, then waiting til summer for the floors is no problem. I'm glad to hear that's what you usually do, thanks.
