Why does there need to be a pissing match between TUG and TS4MS? I just don't get it. We are all wherever we are by our own choice. We contribute, or don't, again by our own choice. For the life of me, I don't get why there has to be name calling, finger pointing and a lot of chest pounding "we're better than them!"
I apparently joined TS4Ms in 2006 but never really read any of the content here until the group was recently pointed out to me by a common member of both groups who was offended by a post I made about "guests." HOLY COW! I had no idea it was such a can of worms. My comment "OY" was made because of the number of people who come into that forum, out of the blue, and either whine about something (usually the purchase they made two weeks before and they can't rescind) or they want "expert advise" from knowledgeable TS owners before taking the plunge.
The way I see it, internet communities only work if people join and take part in the community of sharing information. I don't like to see freeloaders (defined however you wish to) come in to tap into resources without "paying their dues" either with money or in sharing and contributing to the informational flow. There are several "guests" there who are high end contributors - - JLB comes to mind as probably the most prolific "guest" on TUG and yet I would not consider him a freeloader of the TUG system.
I don't know how one can resolve the balance between membership, paid membership and contributing membership . . . but I do not like to see people in any internet forum who come wanting and taking information without any real contribution to the community at all.
I know I'm going to make an enemy or two by posting this here, but the issue seems to be "here" and not "there" so that is why I'm posting in this forum. I sincerely hope that I will not have the rath of whoever upon me for speaking up . . . but I posted with some degree of confidence that individual, spirited opinions are cherished and perhaps even applauded here. Not that I'm awaiting anyone's standing ovation mind you, just that I hope my view will be treated with some respect and accepted as just that . . . my view.
