We can't use that name. That forum already exists. Oops. You mean you aren't a member yet? Never mind.

First of all, I want everyone to understand that I fully support what the mods are proposing. Just want to throw out a thought playing devil's advocate and I dislike that phrase. Just want to throw out something that may or may not have been considered.

Free speech has been mentioned many times. Does placing certain threads into a Steam Room to limit the number of people who can read it involve censorship in any way?

I have always distained book banning. I am disturbed when School systems state that these books will not be allowed into our libraries or class rooms. Never understood the point of this action. The books will be available to anyone who wants to view them outside of the school system. Does limiting the viewership of the books have any similarities to limiting the people who can view certain threads?

Anyway, it does not matter to me what happens with this whole situation. The Free Speech issue is not that different to me (and I am stressing ME) then censoring someone's "right" to read what he or she wants to "read."

Does this Steam Room suggest that it is ok to say what one wants but people have to be "old enough, mature enough, understand us enough, etc" to read those same words that are free to express?

You're right. I just goggled 'The Bordello.com' and it popped up. I was afraid to enter, tho. It said, "best viewed when on alcohol," and it's a little too early to start drinking.

If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

The analogy is not book burning. We aren't burning any books. All content remains as originally posted unless it has material that needs to be redacted such as individual names or profanities. The right analogy is a library card. You can't check out books without a library card. If you don't have a library card, you can enter the library, but you can't check out the book or use all of the features of the library. Same here. Anyone can get a library card. They just need to apply. The application form consists of 100 posts and a checkmark in a box.

I have not been on this forum long, however I do own more than 2,000,000 FF points and several non-FF weeks that I have exchanged through RCI for a number of years. I just purchased a trader week that will exchange through II, and I plan to make my first SFX exchange soon. 100 posts doesn't mean that a member has little knowledge or experience in TS. Instead it reminds me of high school teachers and college profs that gave credit for class participation. That practice encourages people to offer up a lot of mostly useless comments. Anyone who has ever sat through a four hour business meeting knows what I am talking about. They are usually filled with people that like to hear themselves talk.

With that said, I enjoy reading this board, and I hope to contribute more in the future. I just don't like the feeling of being shut out of an area based on number of posts. On the bright side....this rant just brought me closer to the magic number...100. lol

There is a male Goumba room and it is invite only. You get the invite then put your request in to join. Would you like to get an invite? Warning the Goumba room is for males only and is adult rated.

                      Brent,

If it's any consolation, when the Political board became an opt-in forum it virtually ceased to function. With a bit of luck anything posted in or moved to the Steam Room will generate very low levels of interest and will consequently die on the vine.
It's compromise solution to a messy problem.

Truth be told, I thought you were using the name of a ficticuous room for example purposes.

I am pretty sure that I am adult male and mature enough to handle whatever is in the room you speak of. Thanks

                            Boca,

I didn't mean to imply book burning. "The analogy is not book burning. We aren't burning any books. All content remains as originally posted unless it has material that needs to be redacted such as individual names or profanities. The right analogy is a library card. You can't check out books without a library card. If you don't have a library card, you can enter the library, but you can't check out the book or use all of the features of the library. Same here. Schools try to ban books and the reasons are many and one of them may be that the kids are not mature enough to read those books. Problem with that is that the books are readily available to those kids anywhere else including many public libraries.

Yes, the solution proposed will work and I support it. I can't help but think though that there will be some out there who would object to the thought that some adults are not mature enough to make reading of the certain threads their own choice. Personally, I see less harm in leaving it as it is. If newbies are offended by it when reading it, why would they be less offended by it when they apply and have sufficient posts?

The strength of this board has always been its free speech principal. I read through much of what was posted and even posted once or twice. Did not really see anything at all that was offensive.

Excellent idea to limit to frequent posters, I have a long way to go, but not in a hurry to jump into the steam

I think 100 post is a good number. But it would nice if we could also have request in, with a good reason.
