for pictures of grandson Zachary's first horseback riding lesson at the Kelso Farms, Lynn Grove, Kentucky.

The Kelso's raise and train mules, many of which are hauled by them to California for sale, as well as several other states.

However, Zac is not riding a mule, but a pinto.

    Excellent!

I hope Zac liked his ride and continues to learn more about the sport and the animals. It is a great hobby for both girls and boys.

Thanks for showing. Such a beautiful sport too with a great animal. I hope he will enjoy it and be good to his pal.

Very sweet! I hope he enjoys it. I learned to ride as a child, and one of my DDs does as well. I think, with the right teacher to point them out, horseback riding teaches some important life lessons. And it's awfully fun. Plus, if the farm is anything like the farm my DD rides at, the boys are outnumbered by the girls by like 20-1, and those horse-crazy girls go ga-ga for any boy who rides, so he will be VERY popular with the ladies! (I know you didn't want to hear that, Melvin...)

Good Pictures. My daughters always loved riding horses. My cousin's daughter is going to Murray State and is studying horse management or something like that. Do the Kelso's come to Mule Days in Columbia, TN?

Does anyone else notice that how much Zac looks like his grandpa?

            M. Henley, it's great to see you post here! Haven't seen you around TUG lately...

              Raise & Train for Sale

I seriously doubt it, though I will ask the next time I am out to Lynn Grove.
They raise, train and export to other states mainly. Mules are their business. What they do with them in California, I don't know, but they take a load out two or three times each year.

                TUG Time

I only get here every so often, and less often to TUG. My time has become severely limited.

                  Kelso Daughter

One of the Kelso couples have a 4-year-old daughter who rides like a professional, bareback or saddle. She races around like a termagant, having no apparent fear on anything.
At Zac's first lesson she was on her way to the municipal pool to swim and told her mother no"...to even think about riding her horse..but he (Zac) can...".
                  Guess you may be correct.
This lady gives lessons only to a very few, and there are never any others around. Lessons are only a small sideline with her, as they stay busy with their crops and the mules.

I sure he was enjoying his first ride on a horse. It looks like he was having fun.
Now he will ask for a horse for Christmas

                        Christmas???

                        Christmas?
On the way home from the Kelsos he said, "Nana, you could clean out the barn and buy me a horse..."

                          Soil Type

Tony, you are thinking of central Kentucky where they have lots of limestone deposits underlying the soil (which is needed for naturally occuring bluegrass). We are west of the Tennessee River (KY Lake) only 12 miles, south of the Ohio River 40 miles, and east of ther Mississippi River about 50 miles. Our soil is alluvial and it takes much care and trouble to grow bluegrass here.
