  • Zac's Horse Lessons

Zac went on his first trail ride yesterday, after only three lessons. Kandi, the instructor, says he learns very quickly and ordinarily several more lessons are required before trail riding is allowed. Needless to say "Papa" is very proud of him. When I was his age we had no electricity or indoor plumbing, lived on gravel and dirt roads, and I rode a mule bareback wherever I went. Now we have to have lessons to teach a youth how to handle a horse. I have ceased to call it horseback riding lessons as it is horse lessons, focusing continually on how to approach the animal, how to handle him, and other things that I must have absorbed by osmosis.

For pictures of Zac and his instructor Kandi (and one of her two little girls) see:

and they are more people training lessons in many cases now...I too grew up around them and rarely ever took a lesson until I started showing competitively.

I'm not a professional trainer. I work with the horse I use <no one else would do anything else with him otherwise> and now I am working with a good friend and her new horse. You never would think she owned her other horse for 19 years, the way the new one takes advantage of her.

I am thrilled Kandi is taking the time to teach Zac everything he needs to know about horsemanship. He will be greatful, should he persue the sport, that she did not cut any corners.

Thanks so much for the update and pictures.
