  • New Yahoo group:Carolina's Carolinas

Since there's lots of interest in retirement to the Carolinas, and since I frequently travel to North and South Carolina and love both states...I've started a Yahoo group called Carolina's Carolinas. It's geared to folks exploring retirement options, for sharing advice and experiences in the Carolinas. You can join by emailing to this address:

Please join us! Maybe one day you'll want to "summer" in the Carolinas. I've met many Florida retirees who live in NC mtns from June-Oct or so. Some even live in seasonal mobile home parks...and they all still feel part of a community, all seemed to know each other, and they love that lifestyle. If you join, I'll even tell you the name of the town they all live in part-time in NC. (How's that for arm-twisting?)

Here's a link to a thread I found on Money Magazine's website, vis a vis "Affordable Housing" (read: cheap housing in depressed areas of USA). MONEY Magazine: Best places to live 2007: Top 25 Pricey homes

It looks like all but one city on a list of 25 are located in snow belt and/or rust belt states. That's probably why homes are such bargains there...it all comes down to supply and demand. Anyway, folks who live in the Carolinas or considering a move there oughta join the Yahoo group Carolina's Carolinas to talk about the hottest, most in-demand area of the USA for retirement!

Carol, I'll be joining and I agree that anyone remotely interested in visiting or moving to NC would gain much knowledge from your forum. Thanks for starting it.

(P.S. we like the Georgia mountains too .... we just returned from Blue Ridge, GA).

P.S.S. The area where we live in the western NC mountains is listed as #6 in the USA on Forbes' list of second home ownership.

Actually, the mountains of western NC don't really get that cold in winter. Our winters would be considered mild compared to northern states. I need only a sweater we when go out to eat or to town in winter ... seldom have I needed a heavy coat.

We have a 2-3 snows a year but none in the several foot catagory (so far), more like several inches, or just enough to cover the ground for a winter wonderland affect. Most of the time the snow is gone in a couple of days (just how we like it).

And many people think it's cloudy here all winter ... another misconception as we have many more sunny days than cloudy days, and without the leaves on the trees you can see much more of the beautiful mountain vistas and homes perched on top of mountains.

Robin, which county do you live in? And what is your approx elevation at your house?

                  I'm not near retirement

but I did live in Asheville for two years and LOVED it. I'm in NY now, but I absolutely love the Carolinas and want to retire there someday...I'm about 20 years away though.

Hopefully I can still join. :-)
