Minnesota Woman Shoots Rare Albino Deer on Opening Day of Hunting Season

Being a Minnesota native I love this story. Deer hunting is just a fact of life. No wailing or gnashing about Bambi being killed.

On top of that, the fact it was a woman who shot the deer isn't a big issue. It's treated just the same as if it was a guy. Nothing unusual about a woman going out and bagging her deer on opening day.

Almost anywhere else the news media would have played it up as a big deal. But in Minnesota the whole story is treated almost as if it were filler.
“Maybe you shouldn't dress like that.”

“This is a blouse and skirt. I don't know what you're talking about.”

    “You shouldn't wear that body.”

It was a big deal for the deer.

If we reverse the story and that deer shoots the lady then it would be a big story. Most likely the deer gets off on its claim of self defense but gets fined for not wearing orange clothing and not having a valid license and the lady's horns not being long enough.

Hope I don't cause a controversy, but our 15 year old granddaughter got her deer and elk last year. They haven't bought beef in several years lately, the hunting license money goes to upkeep of our forests and the elk/deer herd numbers are kept under control so they don't starve to death! :O)

Good for her. I hope you are a proud Grandma.

FWIW - I am not a hunter at all. But I have no problems with sport hunting. I support the right to bear arms, and I fully believe that. to level the playing field, we should also arm bears.

If the hunter has to run the deer down, wrestle it to the ground and then kill it with his/her bare hands I would see it as a fair fight and some far fetched idea of sport. But to drive into it's home in a 4x4 truck, have a few swigs of high octain beverage to keep warm & then fire a bullet into it's brain from several yards away with a high powered state of the art firearm smacks of killing for fun to me. There are other ways to feed a family in modern America.

Shoot at a firing range target if you must get enjoyment from guns. If you absolutely must kill something, come over to my place. I've got plenty of gophers. You are welcome to thin the herd.

So what makes a deer worth saving but not a gopher?

P.S. I bet this thread gets moved to the Political forum real soon...

                  Ditto.

Furthermore, in our area, if hunters did not thin out the deer population they would soon overpopulate and starve . . . the deer that is. I also don't believe that real serious hunters, and I know of many, are drinking while they hunt. Way uncool in these parts.

Venison fills our freezer every year. None really goes to waste, even the hides are donated to Hides for Habitat. It was so hard for me to understand how someone who loves the animals they kill and pays to protect their habitat, could have such passion for shooting them. It's still very strange, but I've been to enough fund raisers ( Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, etc.) to get it.

As stated above, hunting is a way of life in MN.

I freely admit I am a hypocrite. I love to go stream fishing. I can't say that I fill my freezer, though. Those trout end up costing me about $8-$10 apiece with my success rate.

Also wanted to add that the state accepts small donations at the time of license application for the processing of meat to be donated to the foodshelves. Many people don't care for the taste or just don't need the meat, but still enjoy hunting. Many area butchers also donate their services for these donations. Hopefully, this makes some people feel a little better.

For the area in which my husband hunts, the population is so thick they have increased the limit to five per license. Venison jerky, anyone?
