How often do you change furnace filters? The recommendation from the HVAC person was every three months.

    They need changing???

I would guess about as often as a guy living alone changes his underwear.

“This is a blouse and skirt. I don't know what you're talking about.”

    “You shouldn't wear that body.”

I change 2 to 3 month if I can remember the day. Otherwise, I changed when I change from AC to heater and from heating to AC.

DW and kids has some issue with dust. Last time she found me using cheap filter and give me a good lesson, so it now is very costly.

        Depends on the filter.

My filters run about $80 a pop and they last a year.

I typically take mine out and blow them out with the air compressor a couple times a year.

It all depends on the filter. Not all air filters are created equal.

The changing of filters are for the unit to perform at the best level. Some are 30 days, some ( pleated ) are three months. You have to be careful about going from a 30 day filter to the 90 day because it may damage the unit because of return air shortage on some units, you must watch it. People with inside pets need to change filters more often. Also, the amount of vacuum cleaning comes into play. Central vacs are the best.
Changing filters are very cheap compared to having HVAC repairs. So, change them and change them often. Have your unit(s) serviced at least once a year by a HVAC person. The coils need to be kept free of dirt which is the job of the filters. The cleaning of your air ducts is very important.

Most people have NEVER had their ducts clean. Have it done and then see what you have been living with ( breathing with ), you will not believe it ! A clean unit keeps operating and costs down and you and yours comfortable.
The outside unit needs to be kept free from brush growing around the unit and also snow build up. Hose it off a couple of times a year.
When very cold or very hot you want your unit and filters in top condition.

            have a good one,

Duct Cleaning: Is it really important?

              Only sometimes.

We use these filters, which are very popular here. We change them every three months. We use three at a pop, two for the house, one for the casita.

In addition, we have the HVAC company come out twice a year on contract to do an inspection and tuneup of our heating, air conditioning, and swamp cooler (he also starts it up for the season). This is very important here, because if we ever have a problem where we need a service call, we go on the priority list...and you need that in our summers.

We've never used permanent filters, although I am interested in them. But its my understanding that they need to be washed/rinsed, blown off and dried at intervals similar to what we do now. Is that true?
