  • Christmas Past

Since the holidays are here I thought it would be nice to hear from people to reflect on Christmas past. It could be a very special Christmas, your family traditions, topics of how things used to be etc.

I remember when nothing Christmas would appear prior to Thanksgiving. The day after everything went Christmas.

There was no black friday. No big boxes ( Lowes, H.D.,C.C., Best buy etc. ) The place to go was Rose's or Western Auto and local clothing stores. You actually went out into the cold to the stores to shop. There was that one store that had Santa. I was afraid of him.

We were not allowed to open any gifts till Christmas morning. Everyone got sparklers to bring in the new year.

NOTHING ever went on sale till the day after Christmas but it couldn't be a Sunday. That was when people went out for bargains and spent money they got for Christmas. Decorations ,paper and cards went on sale but not by half price. Merchants still made a little money on items. If it didn't sell then,it was put in storage and brought out the follqwing year. Stores would close for a couple of days afterwards and take inventory.

Mom (93) tells of her Christmas being a shoebox with an orange, some nuts and a peppermint stick. Also " special things " for the Christmas meal.

Christ was welcome in public schools. We would have a tree and a party, exchange cards and sing and be in plays. Christ was allowed in public places and no one was offended. Merry Christmas was heard everywhere !

Church was always special. Lots of stuff going on there for kids and adults. Christmas Eve services were always special !

One great Christmas for me was when I saw Bob Hope in Korea.

For tradition, we buy Christmas ornaments while on vacation. We have over 30 years of tree ornaments with receipts for most of them along with the stores business cards when avaiable. Most are still in the original bags and boxes. Photos are taken and they are logged in inventory by the year purchased. We start with the most recent year and work our way back. I plan to place all that info. on a CD soon. I have had to fix or repair them over the years. It takes a long time to put up and take down our tree. We have 229 so far. We use a 9.5 'to 10.0' tree and in order to get the all the ornaments on. It must be in the center of the room and we use the whole tree. We added a glass top sunroom to the house to have a place to showcase the tree. As we put the ornaments on we remember the places we have been.

Please add your thoughts and everyone have a Merry Chrisrmas !!!!!

We always got together on Christmas Eve to have dinner and family time. As we got older we opened our presents on Christmas Eve. All our family, extended and immediate always went to one of the aunts or uncles homes on Christmas Day for dinner and fun. Since none of them are alive today, we have stopped that tradition. I so wish we could get back to those wonderful family times together. It means so much to have those wonderful memories and I will always remember them.

My twin sister died last year and it was sudden and so sad. Without all those wonderful family memories, it would be really hard for me this year. I will keep her in my heart always and cherish the years I had with her. She was only 56 and too young to leave me. We lived and worked together so as you can see we were really close. Sorry for the sadness.

Christmas will be wonderful this year because I have 2 grandsons to keep me going and my children are a blessing. We will make new traditions and plan new things to celebrate together. I like the old traditional tree with the colored lights so every year I put it up with the old ornaments. I have had to replace many but I try and buy something that looks old. I even have some antique ornaments that were my grandmothers. I don't use them now, too fragile. I like to make fudge and all my friends expect it! I guess that is my best recipe at Christmas. So I have already made fudge, make chex mix, make spice tea mix and put up the tree. I AM READY FOR SANTA!!!!

Timesharing has certainly added to our family time and I wouldn't change the years of trip to WDW. The Christmas trip we took was great. They really know how to decorate. I do believe that was probably the best family trip we took at Christmas. Can't wait to go at Christmas again sometime.

God really has blessed me thru the years and he is always with me in the good and bad. Yall have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from my family to yours!

You don't know this. This is how you felt, not what reality was. Reality was that those it offended generally held their tongues, not wishing to be pointed out as "different" so soon after WW II.

Perhaps the holiday should be renamed Giftmas.

Just thought I'd mention that we too buy Christmas tree decorations when we visit different areas of the country (while timesharing). This makes a great memories each time they go up on the tree (also a 9 footer).

Also, I have a few ornaments from my childhood and one from my grandmother.

My favorites are the ones my children made in pre-school and their "baby" ornaments that I bought for each of their first Christmas'.

I call our Christmas tree my scrapbook.
