  • Memory Foam mattress toppers - questions

Does anyone here use a memory foam mattress toppers? I see the advertising, but I wonder how good they really are. How long would you expect one to last?

We have a local overstock/seconds company near my home. They have king sized topper for $50. They are all wrapped, but it appears to me that they are about 1 inch thick Waste of money or worth trying? Can they be stacked so that I could get 2 inches?

I've never spoken with anyone who has used this type of product so I'm curious.

I bought one about an inch thick for my son's bed at Bed Bath and Beyond, it was $100 for a full size. It's great. But he weighs under 75 pounds, doesn't give it much of a workout... My Dad has a thicker one, it was more $, and he is very happy with it. Wow, I just checked my bed, we have one is plain uncovered memory foam one that I completely forgot about, it looks at least 1 1/2" thick, could be 2". We've had it for at least 4 or 5 years, got it when our "pillow top" stopped feeling pillowish. DH thinks we spent $150 or $200, and I gotta tell ya, our bed is fantastically comfy (even DS with his own 1" version says our bed is much better, but then again, he likes to hang out in here and avoid going to bed).

I would do some research on the traditional linen/bedding sites in terms of price/thickness, and go from there.

I think without spills or pet accidents, it should last at least a few years; the memory foam seems denser than the regular foam that disintegrates. Turning it from head to toe, and over, will help, though we haven't done that (obviously, since I forgot we even had it).

eta: uh, well, I guess it's now kind of clear that I'm not the one that washes the mattress pad above the topper, but I swear it gets cleaned periodically.

      Sue,
If you want to purchase a memory foam topper, there is a lot more to getting a good one than deciding how thick a topper to get.

I have a memory foam mattress, which I've had for about six years. When we moved I had to put it in storage for six months and use a regular mattress. After three weeks of excruciating pain I decided to purchase a topper for the mattress I was using. I Googled "memory foam mattress toppers" and became educated. Besides thickness you have to decide the density you want. More density equals a softer feel, and also more support if you are heavier. After I was educated I went to EBay and looked for places selling the toppers who also had decent educational websites. I bought a 3" topper with a density of 4.something, and paid roughly $180. four years ago.

So my answer to you is yes, you could get one for $50., but it would be a waste of money. If you spent decent money on a 3" topper with good density, it should give you many years of good service.

forgot about the density, good point! I agree, it's probably worth it to pay some extra $, even at the priciest, it's a big savings compared to a new mattress, and there are some places it's not worth the savings

We have a 4 inch, 4 pound density memory foam mattress topper and my wife loves it.

I would not say I love it, but I think it is as good or better than any other mattress that I have slept on.

When we were considering this in the beginning the advise I received was to get at least a 3 inch and get at least a 4 pound density.

Based on the advice I received here and OY, I decided to go with a 2 inch, 4 density, Serta brand. I was worried about getting sheets and my mattress pad over the topper.

            Thanks for your help.
