  • New Years DayTraditions?

The story goes that for the New Year, you want to start out going forward, so you don't eat what goes backwards. Poultry walk backwards as it scratches for food. So for our family, we tend to eat pork, which pushes forward as it searches for food, or when the grocery store used to run special prices, we would have lobster. This is our New Years Day tradition.

Because of our change to this forward thinking, I have grown 6 inches and am now tall, dark and handsome. Okay, that part isn't true, I am still a short, fair skinned of Norwegian heritage and plain old guy. But we still do this tradition.

So what do you have for your new years traditions?

Well, meatballs can roll forward, with a little help, so I guess I'm alright.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

My family always had Navy Beans and Cornbread on New Years Day and my wife's always had Corn Beef and Cabbage. They were to bring good fortune in the coming year.

Black eyed peas and greens are a tradtion here in the South. A real Southerner in the sailing club makes them for us..........

We don't really have a New Years Tradition as often we are away. This year, we will be in Pasadena at the Westin Hotel for 4 nights for the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl game as well as the other festivities associated with the Tournament of Roses. We have spent New Years in Las Vegas a few times as well as in Laughlin Nevada. Some years we go to our local casino/resort and stay in the hotel for a couple of nights over New Years. Last Year we spent it with our son and his family in Tennessee. If we are home, my wife usually fixes a great ham dinner with lots of goodies.

We always have ham and cabbage on New Year's Day. Have to put a dime in the pot when cooking the cabbage to bring in a prosperous new year. And of course the kids won't eat the cabbage unless it's covered in cheese sauce.

We eat black eyed peas, of course. You mean everybody doesn't?

                  That does sound good.

Most years, I bring my grill into the garage before the snow flys. That way, I can use it all winter long. This year, garage didn't get clean to make a spot, snow flew, and I am without grilling this winter. I did get the smoker in the garage. Right now, I have both cars outside, the snow is blowing, and I am smoking cornish hen. Wow, is there a layer of smoke in the garage.

What a wimp! My grill stays right outside the french doors to the deck all year long and I use it all year long. Snow, sleet, hail. OK I take a break after blizzards.

The only New Year's tradition I have is alka seltzer and football.

My mother's husband eats a herring at midnight (New Year's Eve in to NY Day). He says it is his family's tradition to bring luck in the new year. I have to say, he is one of the luckiest guys I know, and not only because he married my mom!

Now see how sad you made me.

It is more of a grill issue than being man enough, so to speak. It is a Holland Grill and it just doesn't want to heat. Putting in the garage gets it to temp much quicker. Garage isn't heated, but still air allows it to heat and keep the temp up. Last Holland grill for me.

Grilling in the garage even with the door open is not a good idea.

Those were my thoughts as well. We have a natural gas built-in barbecue on our back patio so it doesn't move. However, the weather is rarely an issue here at any time of the year so we use it all the time.
