I thought the commercials this year were pretty pitiful knowing how valuable that ad time is. I also didn't think the 1/2 time show was a big whoop but then I'm an old foggey and my idea of great entertainment runs to an evening sitting on the lawn cheap seats listening to James Taylor or even sitting at home watching a PBS retrospective of Peter, Paul & Mary. So I'm no judge of great 1/2 time entertainment.

The game, on the other hand, was thoroughly entertaining to this west coast non-fan of football. I'm really glad I didn't miss it.

Youtube is a chore for my ultra-slow dial up connection. Refresh my memory please. What was the Garmin commercial?

The little red car driving through the streets of Paris and into the countryside, and you can't see the driver...do you remember it? I don't want to give away the ending!

I love a good commercial, so I always look at the Super Bowl ads the next day. You're right, it was a pretty pitiful lot this year. And what's up with Tom Petty? Is he really so big? He's big, but he's not on the level of Paul McCartney and the Rolling Stones and Prince, is he?

No, I must have missed it. I'll go ahead & try the Youtube thingy. It just takes so dang long to load them on my dial-up antique pc.

I'm sorry. It will probably be all start-and-stoppy, too. But it is good!

Tom Petty is huge and has been since his Damn the Torpedos release c1980.

He keeps some nice company as well. Do you remember the Traveling Wilburys album released in 1988? That" band" consisted of Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty. I'm sure even our barndweller recognizes some of those names.

                    His hit list is extensive.

Granted the half time show was "safe" and all but one song came off one album which many fans, myself included, do not consider his best work.

I dunno, somehow in my mind he's not THAT big. And he didn't even do "Don't Do Me Like That"! Isn't that his biggest hit?

It took me ages to realize that "Free Falling" is his--I used to hear it and think "John Mellencamp? Donny Osmond?" I mean, it's a nice song, but it's like the mellow sounds of Tom Petty.

His biggest chart hit here in America was "Mary Jane's Last Dance" I think. Here is a list of "Greatest Hits" up until 1993. He was inducted into the hall of fame in 2002.

"American Girl" (included on the album Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers) – 3:32
"Breakdown" (included on the album Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers) – 2:42
"Listen To Her Heart" (included on the album You're Gonna Get It!) – 3:03
"I Need to Know" (included on the album You're Gonna Get It) – 2:23
"Refugee" (included on the album Damn the Torpedoes) – 3:22
"Don't Do Me Like That" (included on the album Damn the Torpedoes) – 2:42
"Even the Losers" (included on the album Damn the Torpedoes) – 3:38
"Here Comes My Girl" (included on the album Damn the Torpedoes) – 4:25
"The Waiting" (included on the album Hard Promises) – 3:59
"You Got Lucky" (included on the album Long After Dark) – 3:36
"Don't Come Around Here No More" (included on the album Southern Accents) – 5:04
"I Won't Back Down" (included on the album Full Moon Fever) – 2:56
"Runnin' Down a Dream" (included on the album Full Moon Fever) – 4:23
"Free Fallin'" (included on the album Full Moon Fever) – 4:15
"Learning to Fly" (included on the album Into the Great Wide Open) – 4:01
"Into the Great Wide Open" (included on the album Into the Great Wide Open) – 3:44
"Mary Jane's Last Dance" (new track for this release) – 4:33
"Something in the Air" (new track for this release) – 3:17

and no maybe not a Beatle or a Rolling Stone but certainly a songwriter with great talent. Interesting fights he has had with the recording industries as well.

Yeah, I'm a really big SMUCK. Really, I do kinda recognize the name but thought it was related to race cars. And for the record, I was never a big Beatles fan either until Rubber Soul. I was into Joan Baez & the Chad Mitchell Trio. My 80's years were spent listening to John Denver & James Taylor. I'm so out of the current stuff that I wouldn't know any big music star if they sat down beside me on a pool lounge at the Westin in Scottsdale. Hell, they might have and I never knew!

I watched the Garmin commercial, Wacky. Very cute. Not mega award material (you know those awards they give every year for great commercials; mostly European & Japanese stuff) but better by far than any of the ones I did catch on Sunday.

In defense of earning "The Biggest Smuck Old Lady" award...
I love Bob Seger doing Old Time Rock and Roll; The Stones doing almost anything but especially Satisfaction and The Doors Light My Fire the long seemingly endless version. That one brings back memories of my senior prom.

Okay, I do recognize "Free Fallin" but can't say I ever knew who the songwriter was. Lawren, you are amazing. A veritable font of knowledge. I'm impressed.(insert bowing smiley here.)

I'm despondent that I didn't get invited to rate the ads at USA Today HQ like I did last year, getting paid and fed to watch the Super Bowl, my idea of a great SB Party.
