It worked 2 nights ago...

It's a GE gas digital in cabinet. About 6 years old. Is there any possibility this is something stupid like a blown out pilot light? Or do I have to call Mark the appliance guy tomorrow?

Is it giving a code? (F1 is the clock board usually. F7 could be a stuck button. etc) Don't think it has a pilot light, more likely an electronic igniter.

No codes. Just no heating. Thank goodness I can use my Weber in place of. Looks like I'll be seeing Mark. Nice guy and he's reasonable. He's been servicing my appliances for 13 years now but I really didn't need to write him a check at the moment.

I feel your pain

In the past couple of weeks our garage door spring broke, my glasses broke, our vacuum cleaner broke and in the high winds part of our (already in bad shape) fence blew down. It's an epidemic.

Good luck on your oven. Hopefully it's an inexpensive part that can be replaced. We have a great store near us that sells every appliance part possible and usually my DH can do the Mr. Fixit himself.

Poor Lawren ~~ I feel so bad for you!! These things have a way of finding the worst possible time. I just put my G.E. "old faithful" out to pasture ~~ nothing wrong with her, (okay ~ the glass in the oven door was cracked....), but my boss was getting all new, and asked me if I wanted her 2 yr. old smooth top. We bought "old faithful" when DD was 7 months old. She just turned 36!! Think we got our money's worth!! Hope yours is soon feeling better!

only 6 years old? Man they don't make 'em like they use to. My parents bought a freezer back in the 70's. It's still going. We purchased a new Whirlpool side by side refrigerator when we built our house. It shot craps 30 days before the warranty on the compresor ran out (thank goodness). The repair man told us to get the "engergy star" rating they really didn't make the refrigerator more efficient. They just under powered it resulting in more frequent break downs. Our evaporator on our AC went out at about 6 years. We were told the same thing by the guy that repaired that. Cheaper materials that wear out far to soon. I guess quality has become a thing of the past and now has to be replaced by extended warrenties or just planning on replacing most things every 5 to 10 years.

My oven was not heating up to temp, did some research on the net and long story short it was the electronic igniter. It was $15 part on ebay.

Our GE range/oven had similar problem. The igniter went, about 7 years in....we bought the original part thru GE parts online....DH installed it and it worked until we replaced all the appliances about a year and a half ago. It was a simple switch-out, nothing dramatic.

Hope it is an inexpensive repair.....my microwave and my clothes dryer went in the past few weeks - I feel very 'retro' with the laundry hanging around the family room - reminds me of my childhood growing up in an apartment in the Bronx with the 'illegal' washing machine smuggled into the apt in a TV box ......I need to find the time to shop for a new one.

Agree with pretty much everything, except that my igniter cost about $20. Same part may range (in my case) $20-60 for the part alone. Easy fix too, probably 20-30 minutes to pull the oven apart, install the assembly and replace the oven parts.

You must have done better at buying appliances than I did. Of the three we had installed in the our house when we built it, only the oven is original (GE electric) both the Whirlpool appliances (fridge and dishwasher) have been repaired or replaced (fridge repaired on their dime, dishwasher replaced on my dime). The Whirlpool washer and dryer we use to have didn't make it 10 years either. Needless to say, Whirlpool is no longer at the top of our list when appliance shopping.

Mark just left.

Long story short he lost his dad last week after a long, long illness. I wasn't here for 4 days and didn't want to rush him with his grief. You are never ready for that kind of loss. I can use my grill and my stovetop for quite some time without feeling any pain.

It was the ignitor.

Tab $255. and he is very reasonable for these parts. My golden rule is not to work on something that can explode and DH is lightbulb status on Mr Fix-it.

Could have been worse. If it were the computer I'd be better off getting a new oven. Still. OUCH!

We are a very small county. The only one smaller in NY State is Staten Island and they have much more density than we do here in Rockland. Everyone knows just about everyone. If you don't know someone, someone you do know does.

Hot tip on the dishwasher bleckies. Use Lime Away and then Glisten to get rid of them.
