  • Jury Duty Scam:

    JURY DUTY SCAM:
This has been verified by the FBI (their link is also included below). Please pass this on to everyone in your email address book. It is spreading fast so be prepared should you get this call. Most of us take those summons for jury duty seriously a new and ominous kind of fraud has surfaced.

The caller claims to be a jury coordinator. If you protest that you
never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your
Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the
information and cancel the arrest warrant. Give out any of this information and bingo, your identity was just stolen.

The fraud has been reported so far in 11 states, including Oklahoma, Illinois, and Colorado . This (swindle) is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they are with the court system. The FBI and the Federal Court System have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning consumers about the fraud.

Snopes site: says this is real fraud.

It's to easy to say you should never give out personal information to someone who calls you over the phone. People just do not think about it when they're caught off guard. I know to many educated people who just wouldn't think this would be a scam. It's unfortunate but there will always be enough people that fall for something like this that we'll forever be plagued with the latest and greatest way to seperate us from our financial identities.

Thanks for heads up Frank. I could see where some might get flustered because of a call like this and forget about the "never give info to anyone you don't absolutely know who they are".
Anyway sounds like a bad one. There are a lot of folks out there just waiting for all of us!!!

I have call intercept on my phone, just don't take the call.
If they somehow get through, I tell them I am on the no call list and they are subject to action against them by me.
I ask them for their phone number and I'll call them back. Nothing!
