My attitude to the phone is that I look upon it as a convenience for me.

When it becomes inconvenient then I change behaviour.

For instance my cell phone I turn on when I want to make a call, all other times it is off. To reach me I'm available at home or in my place of business for those who want to reach me and have my home number (and their's is displayed on caller ID) at work there is the normal phone screening process.

I don't feel bad just saying I don't have the time now and hanging up on unwelcome calls.

I actually have it written into my client agreement that, while I have a cell phone, it is usually off and it is not a good way to reach me. I note that the best and most expeditious way to reach me is via email, or else to leave a message with a live person at my office.

I have some clients who ignore that, and I will occasionally get messages from them on my cell phone. Somehow they think that they will have quicker access to me by calling my cell or home phone.

Usually I get the message days after they left it, when they could have reached me and gotten a very quick response by sending me an email or calling the office and leaving a message with my secretary. I really only keep my cell phone on when I'm in my car, and I don't carry it on me, but people don't seem to understand that, while a lot of folks like to carry their cell phone on them and keep it on at all times, I don't.

Nowadays, I have a couple of friends and family that have my distinctive ring number, and if that rings, then I will get up from dinner and answer the phone. Otherwise, the phone goes to voicemail from about 6 pm to 10.
