  • If you get paid in Euros, Gasoline prices flat for 2 years - is it just the dollar?

We are constantly told by the media that "gas went up today". If one lived in a country where they had the Euro. The same headline would be, the dollar went down again today. Here is a chart of the last two years of the Euro vs. the Dollar.

So, in terms of the Euro, gas has not increased in the last 2 years.

I was just talking to my Dad about this last week. It's happening b/c the dollar is declining so fast...we can buy less oil for every dollar...not b/c oil is rising despite what the press wants us to believe!

According to CBS tonight, 1/3 of the current price of oil is due to the decline of the dollar.

Living in Europe and getting paid in dollars, one really appreciates how the dollar in behaving like a third world bannana republic currency. There has been only one very minor increase in gas prices in the 8 months I have been here, but the dollar has dropped over 15% against local currency. I keep my cash in either local currency or euros.

It is not just the euro gaining on the dollar. When I was in Switzerland in Feburary, the Swiss franc was just over 90 cents. Now it is over $1. Even the periennially shaky Romanian lei has gained a lot of ground on the dollar.

It certainly isn't just the Dollar. Prices here in the UK seem to be increasing almost weekly.

Interesting---because the dollar seems to have gained on the pound some in the last 120 days, while losing to the Euro.

I remember the Swiss Franc being pretty steady at 40 cents and having to divide everything by 2.5 about 8 years back. Now it is close to par. That's a 250% increase...

One of the reasons I vacation in the USVI (and Caribbean) since is the fairly cheap prices vs. Europe. Can go 4 times a year for the price of a ten day Europe journey. But Europe is indeed magic and I need to return soon. I miss the 80's when it was a pittance...

To get good prices in Europe, you need to come to eastern Europe, where prices are not bad compared to the US, although not dirt cheap like they were a few years ago. I love the TV ad campaign that Croatia has been running with the tag line ''the Mediterranian the way it once was'' (even though they are technically on the Adriatic). The Dalmatia coast and the Istia penisula are spectacular and still reasonably cheap.
