What's Your Favorite Coffee ?

Okay, I was thinking about posting this since buying my most favorite coffee in all the world at the San Juan airport last week.

Brew At Home:
Most favorite/treat: Cafe Alto Grande (splurge) when I feel like treating myself. Cafe Alto Grande , Puerto Rican Coffee
Most favorite/regular: Peet's Sumatran, Kenyan. Peet's Coffee & Tea

Buy outside:
Favorite: Peet's. Most types.
Least: Dunkin' & Starbucks (used to like them both - maybe I'm jaded ?)

My favorites - almost to the point of exclusion - are Starbucks Sulawesi and Starbucks Gold Coast Blend. I buy them whole bean and burr grind just before brewing. Those are both among the boldest of Starbucks beans.

Periodically I try other dark and bold roasts, but I keep coming back to those two. With Starbucks beans I have found that there is a dramatic increase in quality when you move to the better specialty beans and blends. I find Starbucks Espresso and French Roasts, for example, to be quite mediocre.

I also find that when I brew those at home I get much better coffee than when Starbucks has those as their specials of the day,

Last summer when we were on the Big Island I brought back a pound of Greenwells City Roast 100% Kona. When I brewed using those beans at home I noted that it was considerably better than the samples they were serving at Greenwell Farm. By the time I finished those beans I had been away from Gold Coast and Sulawest for almost two months - starting from the time that we left for Hawai'i until I finished the Greenwells we brought back with us.

When I returned to the Gold Coast, I thought to myself, "Well, that Kona was good, but I sure missed my Gold Coast."

I have been buying Boca Java whole beans and am pretty satisfied with them. I do buy several different beans.

Steve, where do you buy your Starbucks beans? The last two bags I bought at the grocery and they were pretty bad. I always liked Starbucks and hadn't used them for a while. I think I bought then at Starbucks previously. I wondered if my taste had changed or if the Kroger beans weren't fresh enough.

Costco has Starbucks and I see a lot of people buying it there. If it's not fresh, Costco is very good about refunds.

I like some Starbucks, but not the Kenyan. It has that nasty sour overcooked taste right out of the coffeepot! Most of the other "bold, dark" roasts are good.

For everyday, I like Chock Full O Nuts (it's that heavenly coffee, better coffee a millionaire's money can't buy) and Melitta. Kirkland (Costco's own brand) is good, too.

What variety did you get? The quality varies dramatically.

I love Dominican coffee, but can only bring home so much, it's usually gone by February. So then I drink Starbucks, either Arabian Mocha Sanani, Italian Roast or Sulawesi.

I get automatic delivery from the Stabucksstore.com every 4-5 wks, whole bean which I grind. Sometimes the coffee is so fresh, it almost tastes sweet. We go through about 1 lb /wk, but if we're backing up on coffee, I just change the frequency of the delivery.

For around the house I'm drinking Dunkin Donut's decaf at the moment. I'll also have some Maxwell House filter packs around the house from time to time. If I want to grind my own beans most of the Mexican beans from Starbucks are fine and they have one with a Dragon on the lable (Sumatra maybe) that I enjoy. When heading into work I usually stop by the local Starbucks and order a cup of their Pike Place Perk.

But my favorite of all time has to be the coffee's we were served while in Italy. I've been unable to find their coffee's duplicated anywhere in the U.S. I almost would return to Italy just for the coffee.

I tend to drink coffee almost exclusively at home and work. Seldom hit a coffee house.

I drink French Roast -- typically Millstone or Peet's or Starbucks. Grind at home.

Speaking of which, for those that claim their home brewed tasted better than the equivalent coffee house brew, is there anything special that you do to achieve this? My experience is just the opposite -- never tastes as good at home. Admittedly, I use a cheap 4 cup coffee maker, but I'd consider nicer equipment and/or a change of my methods if I were sure it would make a difference. As of now I've pretty much resigned myself to drinking lesser coffee at home.
