  • My AC has gone out!!

What else can happen? It's hotter than hell in here (scuse the language) but I get evil when I get hot!! On a weekend no less!!! I guess it's time for a new one, I'm replacing everything else, why not this (did you catch the sarcasm?) Wouldn't you know it, I cancelled my AMHS when I paid off the house. Everytime they'd come out it cost me $55 and they'd just fix it instead of replacing it. It's the original so it's over 25 yrs old. They said my old one was built better than the new ones even tho the new ones are more efficient. I will probably just get a new one. shaggy

I feel for you. Mine went out about two weeks ago. We have a service contract (necessary here) so they came out the next morning first thing. If we didn't have the contract we'd probably still be waiting...Luckily it was a small thing and he was able to replace it on the spot.

I'm sure your utilities will go down once you get a new air conditioner. You should check with your power company, many of them offer rebates if you replace an older unit with an Energy Star compliant one.

You really got your money worth out of that one! I heard that the avg. was seven years! I thought they must be wrong but they said across the US of A that figure was correct. 7 years ?
A new will work much better than your old one. Remember, keep it clean and change filters often and more often in harsh conditions.

Mine is 6 years old we just replaced the compressor this week. It was under warranty compressor only. Other parts and labor extra about a grand. Just thankful we can pay for it and have the warranty on about half the cost. It is a REEM

Mine is acting up too. The problem I am having is that it will not turn off, even if I turn the thermostat to "off." So I had to turn it off at the circuit breaker so as not to burn up the unit. Repairman won't be here for a day or two. It got up to 87 degrees inside today.

Shaggy, unfortunately it is true. They don't build them like they used to. My old unit went 23 years and never needed a service call. This "new" unit started acting up at 10 years.

We have been tempted to drop AMHS several times since they have increased the rate and have fewer plumbing companies they use but still have them. They have replaced our dishwasher, thermastat, and rebuilt the forced air heater and done plumbing service about 100 times in 20 years. The problem is they give us a time to come out always when we are at work.

Our heat pump died at 10 years old. I hate the darn thing because it is so noisy.

DSis, who lives in NYC, does not have ac because she would have to pay for it year round. She can afford it. I think she is absolutely nuts. I'd rather do without food than air conditioning.

The repairman was out to day. He is actually my neighbors dad. He is retired from the hospital and he was the ac engineer head maintenace for a gazillion years. He will have one here in 2 days and put enough freeon to get me thru. It's going to cost $4200 and that includes the inside and outside unit plus changing the duct work. What a relief . I was expecting 5 or 6K . Well, I guess I truly will have a new house. shaggy

Okay, now I am feeling lucky. Wasps built a nest in my unit and got inbetween some contacts and blew a couple parts out. Condenser was the next to go, but since I turned off the electricity to the unit, that didn't happen. Changed out a part, and $180 later, things are cool here once again.

My repairman, like Shaggy's, has been doing it a gazillion years. I am fortunate to have found him.

                        Shaggy,
When all is said and done, your utility bills will be way lower. Remember last year when we got back from SD? Our AC went out, and as if that wasn't bad enough, our Contractor had removed all storm windows (with screens), so we couldn't even open a window!! (A Shaggy moment I'm sure - I think we bonded!) After a little while though, (seemed like forever and a day! ), with new windows, siding, roof, & doors, (and WORKING AC ), I couldn't believe the difference in our utility bills. So I guess what I'm saying, is the end justifies the means! Hang in there!! I feel your pain!
