  • Cracked windshield advice...

My windshield got hit by gravel on the way back from the Hamptons. Same spot of road that did my friend's windshield in last year

I've got an eight inch crack on the passenger side. It seems to be very slowly creeping, gaining about a half inch a day or so.

I don't have time to get it fixed before I drive up to Maine. But I also don't really want to drive my big pig up there instead. Any thoughts? Are highway speeds likely to increase the pressure on the crack? Should I leave it home and take the big pig instead? I know it's shatterproof glass, but I don't want to ruin my trip, either.

If you have any experience with this, please let me know what to expect.

    thanks

It sounds like it needs to be replaced. They can fix it in a few hours. If you drive up with it and you get pulled over you can get a ticket. I would not chance it.

      Avery,

I have a crack in my windshield for months, and months. Mine also got done in by gravel.

I've been lucky, it has not grown, at all. Not wanting to be bothered taking the car in, I have not had it fixed. However, in your case, I think Frank is right. If it's growing, you shouldn't take a chance. Not worth ruining a trip over, that's for sure.

If the crack is growing daily it definitely needs to be repaired. It sounds like the window/windshield may need to be replaced. There is a good chance your insurance will take care of this with no deductible, mine does. In any event, you don't need to "make time" to get it done. Look up "mobile windshield repair" in the telephone book. THEY COME TO YOU. It is a simple matter for these guys to replace a windshield, and it is done in no time at all. I was surprised.

I must be pretty lucky. I haven't been pulled over yet, and I've had that crack for a really long time. Watch, now that we've talked about it, I'll get a ticket.

Ugh, I guess I knew what the answer would be. I forgot about the ticket, too, though that's an easy one to dispense with.

Ok, will look for a quickie place. Just what I need to do this week, what a pain.

Thanks for the reality check, though, much appreciated.

We had this last year for the first time ever...also on the way to the Hamptons. What's up with that?

Listen, getting the windshield repaired was THE easiest repair ever. Ever! You open the Yellow Pages, you call five places with the biggest ads. You tell them that you need the repair work done in your driveway or at your place of business or wherever, before X date. You'll tell them the make and model and year of your car. They'll tell you how much. They will all be cheap, amazingly cheap! Getting the Corolla's windshield replaced cost under $150.

BTW, we only had a small starburst with a couple of cracks radiating off it. The whole thing was about the size of my hand and the cracks weren't moving.

BUT what I learned in the course of doing this--Angela, this is for you!--is that you should definitely have any cracks fixed asap b/c the windshield is part of the protection for the people in the compartment. If the windshield is weakened by a crack, you're at greater risk in case of a crash or a rollover.

Just a suggestion for all. Full glass coverage is usually relatively inexpensive with your auto insurance.

I can't remember! It was one of the big ads in the phone book. I called a bunch of the big ads and then I also called the local glass place who we've used for replacement mirrors and windows. The local place was the only one where they said we would have to drive the car over and then leave it to set for several hours and it couldn't rain or be too hot or cold. They were using an older type of sealant that needed a longer setting time. All of the other places were all set to fix the windshield in our driveway, at our place of business, on a street corner, anywhere we liked, and we could drive it within an hour or so.

When I set up the appointment, I said to the woman, "I know this is stupid...but it's the BLUE car in the driveway, not the WHITE car." (We have two Toyotas, different models, but she had only asked for the make.)

The woman was laughing and she said, "Once we DID fix the wrong car! The customer had parked it in the parking lot where he worked and the guy got there and there was another car, same make, same model, with a cracked windshield, and he fixed that one!"
