This is true. A tire can have plenty of tread and still not be safe to drive. I live in the desert and don't drive a lot. It's not uncommon here for a tire's sidewalls to crack and begin to separate while there is still plenty of tread left. I don't think my last tires had more than 12K on them...

I've heard that any tire over 8 years old is a potential hazzard- including my 10 year old never used spare on the truck.

        It had me looking!

I saw this the other night and had me concerned so much that I was crawling under my inherited Chevy S-10 truck looking for that date code. I then came in to start the search online for tire deals. A priority for me at this time to get the 7+ year tires replaced, including the old unused spare of this '96 truck. The cracked sidewalls of the tires were evident by looking on the backside of each tire. Anyone have tires with "siping", a grooving of the tire tread for supposed better stopping(Les Schwab tires are pushing this for about $12 per tire)? I appreciate the information being shared with the group here.

Siping is common in norther climates, as it really helps for traction on ice. Also, I have heard that a siped tire will wear faster than a non-siped tire, but other people claim it makes them last longer because it dissipates heat.

For what little tires cost and for the precious cargo they carry, change 'em. If eight years is what they say then go with that!
