  • Historical Stock Price and Splits

My parents own some May Department Store Stock that they purchased at about 5 different times in the last several years. Since then it has split some number of times. My father knew where the information was located and what he kept and didn't keep, passed away 3 years ago. My Mother was never involved in any of the finances. Now May has merged with Federated Department Stores and part of the merger they sold some of the stock and gave cash along with stock. I need to figure out the cost basis of the stock. Has anyone had to do this and if so any advice or recommendations? Thanks.

I suggest you contact the treasurers office at May or Federated for information as to what is actually owned. The cost of the stock is whatever was paid for it, splits only would matter if each group of shares had to be valued. I.E. if 500 shares were purchased for $2500 and the stock split 2 for one twice, 2000 shares are now owned- but the cost basis is still $ 2500 for the 2000 shares.
