We started early when he was in middle school.....
visited the campus when we were on vacation. When he was in the 9th grade he went to wrestling camp so he could get a feel for the school. Lots of research on the internet to gain as much information as possible to know what others have done to get there. Picked several clubs to be involved in so that he could be in leadership as well as playing sports. He was in the JROTC program at school. Was their first Battalion Commander that was not a senior! He has also earned the Presidential Award for Volunteering (over 100 hours). He has attended several leadership conferences, Broyhill Leadership (thru the Beta Club - of which he is the state president for NC), Lead-America, Congressional Youth Leadership, HOBY.... any opp that was available he took it. Some we paid $$$$ for and some we did not. This past spring as a rising 12th grader he went to NASS which is 5 days of what it would be like at the Naval Academy - even had a mock sea trails. Also he has been taking the SAT (not PSAT) from the time he was in the 9th grade. He did not take an SAT class, but the last time he took it he did get a study book because he was taking Pre-cal. Geometry and Alg. are on the SAT not CAL.... scored 750 on math he also scored 640 on reading. I would suggest that students atleast start in the 10 grade taking the SAT - but take it in the spring after they have had a year of studying! This probally sounds like it is rambling - it is! I am typing as I think about different things. Been a long process, but worth every moment. It is a way of life if the goal is going to be reached. I might add that I am a school teacher so I knew from the start how important it was to stay on top of everything.

No. Each Congressman and each Senator APPOINTS young people to the service academies. Each may have FIVE attending each academy at any one time, so if you're unlucky or come from a state with high military concentration you might not even have a shot at your reps slot. But each can nominate and, amazingly enough, some reps in some states don't even fill, so even if you don't get your reps PRINCIPLE nomination for one of their open slots, you still have a chance as the academies will massage to get the people they want. If I remember correctly, the President also appoints 200 per year, but they are dependents of current or retired military.
