  • Anyone have experience painting the bathtub a different color

We're up here in Prudenville, MI. trying to help out with major overhaul of this home. Enjoying the cool weather.

Have BLUE tub, commode and two sinks. Sister-in-law wants all changed to White. It would be a major tearout and rebuild to do anything with the tub. I think coating it with epoxy may work and save many days of work.

    Any comments from the experienced?

I have heard of companies that will put a new enamel / powder coat on tubs (without removing them), but do not have personal experience with them. You might call around to plumbing supply houses to see if they have some pointers.

I highly doubt that painting them (even w/ an epoxy product) would work well, however.

I have had my tub re-glazed and it looked brand new when they were finished.

What was the cost to have your bathtub reglazed. I have the same situation our tub is blue and that makes the house dated.

        Thanks

My Mother had her tub reglazed, or some type of re-finishing. It did not last. I am sure it was not done well so it had spots that pulled up, kind of like paint chips. I believe that had it been prepped well, it would have lasted.

Who ever you use, check BBB or any other neutral source for a review. Make sure they have a good warranty.

Re-bath is located 200 miles away. They install liner over existing unit.
The distance alone make it expensive.

I was hoping to hear from someone having done their own spray on system.

              Thanks for the replies.

                  Robert,

A neighbor of ours had their tub done - from green to beige. They had a company come in & do it. They could not use the tub for a week. Looked great - but it did not last. That was over 10 years ago, so maybe it's improved by now!

I bought a kit, but I have not used it; upon reading the directions, tub could not be used for a week - and we only have one bathroom! Maybe someday when we are going away - right before we leave I'll do it. Or better yet we'll just buy a different house!

Resort2me, if you are looking at doing this yourself, I am going to tell you what you already know...Preparation!

You probably know that when you prep your house for painting you scrap, sand, and mask or do anything to make it ready to paint. Depending on the type of paint, probably enamel for this type of job, you will follow their instructions, or the instructions of the store that recommends the painting process. That means…it may take some sanding to make it ready, will require very thorough cleaning to make sure the paint sticks.

Mask off everything very well in the tub that will not be painted.

Paint with light coats and allow to dry. Most people over spray which results in blotches or running. When the paint has dried, you can spray additional coats.

I have done some nice woodworking, stemware holder for my good wine classes (very sharp cabinet in my front room), a cabinet grade recycle/garbage center that was added onto the main kitchen cabinets. The woodworking…I know what to do. The finishing has always been a problem for me. Getting the staining and final protective coats clean and without blotches is always a problem.

If you are going to do this yourself, all I can do is wish you luck.

                      Thanks.
Sister-in-law is pretty sure she would rather I cut up the present tub/surround unit and get rid of it... then I should construct for a drop-in tub and tile the rest. Personally I think the blue looks sharp!

I'm not looking forward to getting under the house to plumb the new tub. Oh well. I came up here to help out.

I had it done April 2005 and it came with a five year warranty and it still looks great! It cost me $265.

Sounds good. What company? I'll check for a franchise locally.
