Much of our fam (cousins and so forth) is in Houston, so I have been following this very closely.

One couple of them has bought the 13 acres on our road across the cove from us for their retirement/family compound. They (more than 30 total) were here last week for Labor Day and the 7 inches we got from Gustav.

Although we did not get it here, areas near to us were getting 6 to 10 inches yesterday from a cold front going through. If you have been following The Weather Channel, that is one of the inland problems they have been talking about. That will get to us later today, so heavy rain is in our forecast for today.

Then, we are in the predicted 8 inch area for tomorrow.

I had been emailing our fam, and now that and cell phone attempts are not going through. I just heard on one of the networks that Tuesday is the earliest expected day for power restoration, and is is going to be hot and sticky. Yuck!

Another of the Houston fam, brother and sister-in-law to Couple 1, has a beach condo on Galveston, which from the reports is likely no longer there.

We have not heard from the other brother/couple.

We have a major tournament at the golf course scheduled for Monday, with pros from near and far. The course has already flooded four times this year, and I am anticipating using the mop, squeegee and wet vac (Super Suck) today and tomorrow.

Mike is OK but with out power. I just spoke to him and it was a small gust of wind that knocked out his power.

I was wondering if Peregrine Townhomes in Freeeport, TX survived. It is right on the beach there at San Luis Pas.
Does anyone out there have any info about that area ?

I just saw CNN's live fly-over footage of the barrier island and saw the damage done to Peregrine Townhomes timeshare resort in Texas. I've stayed there and owned 3 weeks there and know the layout. It looks horrible, all the units look severely damaged. Their one large beachfront pool surrounded by the fence is completely filled with debris. You wouldn't know it was a pool unless you had stayed there. I'm no insurance inspector, but honestly I wonder if it's going to be considered a total loss. There is so much standing water all around there, and if power doesn't get restored, they won't be able to assess damages and repair it in sufficient time to save it. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, and I did like the place.

Oops, looks like I said that five or six days ago.

Ike hit that night. Heckuva blow, and our 6-inch rain gauge was spilling over the next morning. We just got power back.

We had trees down everywhere.

We went down to check the Margaritaville Dock out and it was not there, the cables holding it broke!!! You can imagine the shock of looking down through the trees and a 100-foot dock is just gone!!! It had flipped around so the slips and boat were backed up against the trees.

Fortunately, the NE wind that did the damage, the only direction that can damage the dock, kept it from heading out into the lake. It was still in the cove, up against the next dock. I lowered the boat on the lift until it was in the water and then drove the dock back into place.

The lake has come back up four or five feet.

We got the tournament in at the golf course two days later after cleaning up our fifth flood of the year. I played yesterday and there is still a lot that needs to be done.

We are still unclear on our fam's situation in Houston. We assume the Galveston place is gone, but have not heard from that cousin because of their lack of power. The other two cousins' families were staying together, but we're not sure where.

It appears the ones who bought the property here have a total loss on their house. It took one of those right-front crosses, removing the roof, and the rain did the rest.

Then, we are in the predicted 8 inch area for tomorrow.

You would think that living in the Ozarks would be safer than our original plan of SW FL, but we got 2 hurricanes in 2 weeks here!!!!

JLB...you've had a hell of a time this year in the Ozarks, between the flooding in the spring to hurricanes this past month, it hasn't been pleasant.
Glad you got the dock back, once again.

We've owned here for ten years and this year has been far from the norm. Except for an occasional tornado, it is seldom like this.

The dock situation because of high water is serious, causing significant inconvenience, loss of dock use, property damage, injuries, and even death to some tending docks. One death was very close to us.

I'm hoping the Corps will relax their vegetation regulations to allow clearing of the banks so that docks can be drawn up to the take line, which is 18 feet above normal pool. That makes sense, but being logical has not always been a Corps thing.

I believe it has been a learning year for all around here.

I think the area out there is just gorgeous...although it does get pretty humid. I would have never thought that the mtns. would get tornadoes as much as they did this past year.
We were there this past spring and I was surprised by the intensity of the storms we saw while staying at Table Rock Landing.
Hopefully it will be better for the next several years.
