  • Need advice from a NJ police officer

I just got a parking ticket late last night at my sons School at 2 am in Jersey. I was helping him move from dorm to dorm and parked close to the entrance. The cop passed by once and let it go when he first saw it thinking that the way I was parked I was unloading, Well an hour later I was still there and he saw nothing in the seats so he ticketed me. Of coarse there was nothing in the back seat since we unloaded everything allready.

I went looking for the cop and found him. He said he could not do anything since it is a Municipal ticket and that I have to appear in Hoboken Court. He will also have to be there. Now I might have caught a break, I saw he goofed up on the ticket and he wrote NJ instead of NY plate. Do I even have to respond or worry? My problem is because I talked to him he knows I am from NY and I am afraid that he might change his ticket now to show a NY license plate. If he does change it to look like NY is that ticket still valid? Can I beat this ticket and not show up to see the Judge?

I have one question. Were you parked illegally?

Hoboken is notorious for difficult parking and constant ticketing. (And by the way, it used to be known as the car theft capital of northern NJ--I don't know if it's still so bad.)

To be honest with you, yes, I think you have to respond to this ticket just as if the guy had not made a mistake on NJ vs. NY. I don't think that's really going to protect you. I've been at traffic court up by me, and the judge here would totally nail you on a defense like that and would increase the fine because you tried to pull a fast one.

If you make the court appearance, though, you have a good chance of getting the fine reduced or dismissed altogether. They like to see your pretty face.

How much is the ticket - around here they are only for $25-$100 and they don't increase insurance premiums. Heck - pay it and be done, especially if you were illegally parked for an hour.

Now to answer your question. In MA you can go before the court to fight the ticket - if you don't show - you lose.

Problem is It says I have a court apperance on such and such a date. There is no fine on the ticket.

I was unloading my car and had to park it there since we had to carry everything up to the 4 th floor. By the time we unpacked and made our way down I get a ticket. WE had made a few trips but it might have looked like the car was not moved but it was and we were making trips up and down.

Wacky I know what Hoboken was like 10 years ago and believe me it does not look anything like that now.

Frank, try giving the Court Clerk a call for more info.

You might be able to pay that ticket online.

There is a link on the right side of the page.

                Yes,call them.

They had me going to court in NJ for a parking violation(on a motorcycle) and I just called and sent in a fine.
Much better than the time wasted going to court.

That was the funny thing--it didn't LOOK like that ten years ago, either! Hoboken's been gentrified for at least 20 years now, but even when all the yupsters were already living there in their exposed-brick 1brs, there was a lot of car theft.

I went on the website to find more out on the fine. I put in all the info and this is what I got back.
NJMCdirect is unable to locate the ticket information. Please contact the court to resolve this matter, or refer to the back of the traffic ticket for alternate payment options.

Now this could be because it is only a few days so Maybe I have to wait a few more days for them to load it in.

Alas, still lots of car theft in Hoboken. One per day in a city one mile square.
