  • A Positive Market Question

I have funded a portion of our SEPs and IRAs with FICO Strips, maturities of 2015 and later. American Century holds them.

The other day I checked our accounts on AC online and I thought they were way up. I called and got relayed to the Bonds Desk. He said, yeah, there has been a flight to quality. He said he would see if he could make a market. When he called back he said the market was back down.

I equated that to relying on an RCI Guide to tell me what resorts are available , so I messaged Ameritrade to see if I could search for myself on their site. Yeah, I can do an advanced seach by CUSIPs. I have done that, a few of them, and the market appears to be staying up.

One of the columns in the search is Return to Maturity, and at today's prices, it is only from 3.7% to 4.24%.

5% Bank CDs are still available.

I called AC again, got the same Bond guy, and he is checking the market again.

So, any reason not to sell and switch to FDIC insured Bank CDs?

(With the extra money I could take the limo to a gourmet restaurant. )

I'll try to make this short, but the fact is that it has been an every day thing for the last two months, including while we were in Florida.

The values American Century had been showing for our FICO Strips had been way higher than they could actually get, so I was going around with them.

I got TDAmeritrade pricing them too and they were getting more than AC, but still quite a lot less than the values they showed when I did a search for them on their site.

I finally decided I had to set up four new retirement accounts at TDA, transfer the stuff there, and let them sell it. I had an agreement with my TDA guy that they would do one more pricing when the time came, so that I would know what issues to let AC sell and what issues to transfer.

That was one day last week, but TDA said they would not price them again until I transferred them. I appealed and they said no again. So I gave the sell order to AC. Immediately after that I got an email from TDA saying they would price them one more time.

Too late, they were already sold.

I could have done better and I could have done a lot worse, but I'm happy they are someone else's worry now.

Yep, still have an account there (small). Good credit union when were in D.C. For where we live now, USAA is more convenient.

I have been a member for over 30 years. It is one of my primary financial institutions, since I live not far from its headquarters. It is the largest, or one of the largest, credit unions in the country.

              Thanks.

I've already decided to move stuff there, and I'm just hoping their rates will stay up until I can get it done.

The Wheels of Finance Turn Slowly

As you can see from this thread, I started the process of selling off and moving some of our retirement accounts almost four months ago.

Today those accounts got closed and the funds transferred to our new accounts.

In this day and age of the Internet and electronics, you would think it could be done quicker.
