  • Upstate NY Ice Storm

We just got back last nite from Newport, RI trip. We were supposed to come back a day earlier, on Thursday, because my wife had a club holiday party but it was canceled do to the bad weather and so decided to stay over until Friday. Glad we did, the upstate area got hit pretty bad with ice.
As we came across the Mass Pike the trees were covered in about a quarter to half inch of ice and it was even worse in Albany, NY and north of there were we live. Electricity was out when we got here, but we were lucky, ours came on about 7:30 last nite.
Worse thing is, I've got a lot of cleanup to do over the next few days. We had a lot of big limbs from some big pines in our backyard. About four or five fell on our deck and smashed a railing, the grill and a redwood picknic table.
Lucky tho, they just missed the house by a couple of feet. Could have been a real mess. I can fix the deck myself, the house would have been another story!! lol Man, the backyard looks like a tornado came thru.
Guess we are lucky tho, there are still thousands of folks without electricity and some won't be on for days.
    Newport was nice tho!!!

I've been listening to the storm reports, and many east coast areas got hit extremely hard. Worse ice storm in 30 years. Some are expected to be without electricity for a week.

Sorry for you mess, but I'm glad that you enjoyed Newport, and got home safely.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

DH and 2 buddies are supposed to go to Killington Vt tomorrow
for 3 days of skiing and can't contact Killington Grand to see if there is room for them.

We got lucky here this time, but just 3 miles away the power was still out yesterday. A friend of my Mrs. that lives about 15 miles south of here was told her power would be out 5 days. If I look out my back windows I can see the glistening ice on the trees on the top half of the mountain there.

We were lucky. We received about 4 inches of rain, but no ice. About 10 miles from here they are still without power. When we lived in Rochester, NY, we had a bad ice storm and my (then) finace's house was without power for 12 days. These types of storms are really devastating. I really feel for those people who are so hard hit.

Glad to hear you all are ok. Have been worried about my "Yankee" friends. I hate ice storms. That's what gets us more than snow. I remember one year I was in beautiful sunny Aruba when the US station (Nashville-- of all places) on the evening news said there was a freak ice storm in Winston Salem which is near Charlotte-- (Huh, it's 100 miles away) They showed a picture of the devastation -- I couldn't believe it. It was MY HOUSE!!! My house was fine but my yard was a mess!! Nothing I could do so put on my bathing suit and headed back out for the beach Who'd a thunk it.

This is in no way to demean my friends up north. I was really really worried about y'all. My first thoughts were Tony & Frank and I thought maybe Pat was stuck in Killington. Glad you are safe!! shaggy

Ken, how'd you drive on the ice? If we even get a dusting we are stuck for days? shaggy

The trees were still coated with ice on Friday but the roads were all clear, the highway guys had done a great job getting them cleaned up.
The trees here are still covered with ice. Makes some great photos but a lot of damage also. My backyard looks like a war zone, but nothing hit the house.
It is supposed to be a bit warmer today and warmer still by tomorrow so maybe the ice will start melting off.
There are still a lot of folks without power also.

I am glad for you that you didn't have too much damage. It would have been even worse if you had been out of town too. Let's hope the weather will get warmer soon.

My son is driving from Philadelphia to Albany this morning. He said his company is open.

It makes me very nervous for him to drive into this area.

Don't worry too much, things are pretty well under control now. Most all the roads were clear by Friday or Saturday and today is going to be much warmer so a lot of the ice on trees will melt. Albany wasn't hit as bad as the places a bit north and west of there. He shouldn't encounter any problems.

I have posted a few photos of after the ice showing the pretty vs the ugly side of it.

I have to admit the ice on the trees makes for some nice views. The ugly ones are from my deck and backyard and we luckly didn't get any direct hits on the house like some folks did. Also our power came back soon, some folks are still out and won't be back on for a couple of days.
